The Diplomat on Netflix stars Rory Kinnear as the fictional character of Nicol Trowbridge, the British Prime Minister.
The character was introduced in the very first episode of season 1 and since then, he has remained an important character. The ending of season 1 had given a chance for Kinnear to have a more developed role in season 2 and that is exactly what has happened in The Diplomat.
In the first season, it was evident that Trowbridge was more ambitious than he showed at face value.
While Kate, at first, had thought it would be easier to work with him as he appeared not to be a raging war monger, her perception changed when he openly declared in front of the press that he will avenge the death of the British soldiers by attacking Iran as they might be behind at attack on British soldiers.
This attitude changes the way he was previously perceived. He appears in season 2 as well and there is a rather shocking suspicion surrounding the character.

What do Kate and Dennison figure out about Nicol Trowbridge in The Diplomat Season 2?
The Diplomat Season 2 delves into the chaos that season 1 had ended with. At the beginning of this season, it is shown that Kate Wyler (Keri Russell), the US ambassador to the UK and Austin Dennison (David Gyasi), British Foreign Secretary, are both still in Paris.
These two had gone there with the mission of convincing Micky Sébastian, the French Minister of the Interior Brielle Fournier, to help them get hold of Roman Lenkov. Lenkov is a Russian mercenary who they believe was responsible for the deadly attack on HMS Courageous, the British warship.
Since there was a tip that Lenkov will be on French soil, Kate and Dennison went to Paris, hoping to capture him.
However, during her one-on-one time with Fournier, Kate is surprised to learn that there were British plans already in place to kill Lenkov. This news takes both Kate and Dennison aback as they had thought that Lenkov needed to be captured for interrogation.
As Dennison and Kate start putting the pieces together, all signs lead to Nicol Trowbridge, the British Prime Minister himself, as it seems that it was he who had hired Lenkov to blow up his own nation’s warship.
This realization along with news of blasts at London’s Notting Hill, targeting a meeting between Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell), Kate’s husband who is a currently off duty US ambassador and Merritt Grove (Simon Chandler), a British MP, set the premise of the show.
