Gabriel García Márquez's best-selling novel 100 Years of Solitude is now a major Netflix series that was released on December 11, 2024.
This novel is considered one of the greatest works of Columbian literature and Marquez didn't sell its right for a film because he thought that no movie could do justice to the depths of this family.
But while Netflix acquired the rights for this novel back in 2019, it took almost six years for the team to bring this project, which spans many years and generations on screen.
The series follows the story of cousins and star-crossed lovers José Arcadio Buendía and Úrsula Iguarán, who marries against their parent's wishes and build the fictional town of Macondo. The show follows Macondo's beginnings and stories and the curse that plagues the town, given by Ursula's mother.
Remedios Moscote is the daughter of Don Apolinar Moscote, the conservative mayor of Macondo.

Exploring Remedios Moscote's character in 100 Years of Solitude
To remain faithful to the characters portrayed in Marquez's novel, almost all the cast for 100 Years of Solitude is Colombian. Actress Cristal Apirico plays the role of Remedios Moscote in the series.
Known for her work in Sound of Freedom (2023), Stolen Away (2020), and Bogota: City of the Lost (2024), Apirico was born in Cucuta, Colombia. She has done a stellar job portraying Remedios's innocence, as described by Marquez in the books.
In the books, she is introduced as the nine-year-old daughter of Don Apolinar Moscote, the conservative mayor of Macondo. Colonel Aureliano Buendía instantly likes the girl but must wait for her to hit puberty before marrying her.
Eventually, after waiting a significant amount, the Colonel marries Remedios once she becomes old enough to have children. While the Colonel claims that he loves the girl, many readers of the novel do not perceive their relationship positively. They think that a 40-year-old marrying a 15-year-old girl is not love.
Remedios is a happy and pure girl who is too good for the world, and she dies in pregnancy during childbirth, probably because her body is still underage to undergo the process.
