Netflix's Black Doves has quickly made its way as one of the top espionage series on the platform, and after a thrilling finale, the series has been renewed for a Season 2.

The show stars Keira Knightley, Ben Whishaw, and Sarah Lancashire in the titular roles and follows the story of Helen, a spy for the Black Doves organization, who gets entangled with the criminal Clark family after their son kills her secret lover Jason.

While Season 1 concludes the mystery around Jason and his death after Helen's partner Sam kills Alex and her son Trent, the show ends with Reed (Helen's boss) enjoying a drink with a mysterious woman.

While the show ends without revealing the identity of this woman, showrunner Joe Barton has revealed that Reed's mystery guest is Helen's nanny Marie.

More on Reed's mystery woman and Black Doves Season 2 in our story.

Black Doves showrunner confirmed the identity of the mystery woman

While everyone was in a festive mood, catching up over drinks and lunch, it was easy not to recognize Reed's mystery Christmas guest. After an epic finale that left the Clark matriarch Alex and her son Trent dead at the hands of Sam, everybody had their own celebrations for Christmas Day.

In the final moments of the show, Helen and Sam are seen having lunch together, and every character is immersed in their celebration. In the midst of it all, Reed is also in her fancy, lavish apartment, enjoying a glass of bubbly with a mysterious woman, who is probably her daughter, and they have the same haircut.

That mysterious woman was none other than Helen and Wallace's nanny, Marie, who we saw throughout the whole series, but she was hardly the focus of any scene, which makes her a perfect and invisible spy. As confirmed by creator Joe Barton in an interview with GQ,

''That's Marie, she's Helen and Wallace's nanny. She pops up throughout the series, so it's possible to miss. I mean, she looks like she could be Reed’s daughter, they've got a similar haircut. But no, she's the nanny, so she's been spying on them the whole time. Basically, everyone's spy.''

Barton's revelations make it clear that Reed was taking help from someone, possibly her daughter, to spy on Helen. This is how she also learns about Helen's secret love affair with Jason.

This revelation that Reed was secretly spying on Helen by placing a spy as a nanny in her house increases the stakes of their relationship for Black Doves Season 2.

After the epic showdown in the Season 1 finale, where Sam sacrificed his moral obligations for Helen and killed Trent and Alex to avenge Jason's death, his actions will come back to haunt him in Season 2, as teased by Barton,

''It's all about the consequences of their actions, really. Sam making this personal sacrifice at the end by killing Alex and her son and taking on the burden of that – the moral burden, and also the actual ramifications.''

It was earlier revealed by Barton in an interview with Netflix's Tudum that Sam took on this task upon himself because he owed this to Helen as she also once sacrificed her chance to get away to help him. Season 2 will likely explore this friendship further.
