Trudy Platt has been associated with Chicago P.D. since the very first season. The police procedural drama follows the daily lives and missions of officers of the 21st District in Chicago, and Trudy serves as a desk sergeant in the department.

While the sergeant wanted to be a detective, she suffered an injury which led her to take up a less physically challenging job. However, that does not deter her focus, and Trudy plays an important role in the intelligence unit.

Actress Amy Morton plays Sergeant Trudy on Chicago P.D. While the NBC series remains her most memorable work, she has appeared in several other shows and films as well.

Amy Morton joined Chicago P.D. as Desk Sergeant Trudy Platt in 2014. While she initially had a recurring role, she was promoted to series regular in the second season. Morton has been working in the entertainment industry since the 1980s.

Morton made her screen debut with the television film Through Naked Eyes in 1983 and later made episodic appearances in popular shows like NBC’s Crime Story and CBS’ The Equalizer. In 1992, she appeared in her first film: the Dolly Parton starrer romantic comedy Straight Talk.

Morton then continued her movie career by starring in films like Falling Down, Rookie of the Year, 8mm, Up in the Air, The Greatest, and more recently, It Ends with Us.

At the same time, she has been seen in a number of television shows in episodic roles, including Homeland, The Bear, Private Practice, and ER. The actress had a recurring role as Amanda Harris in CBS’ Blue Bloods and as Catherine Walsh in Starz’ Boss.

Apart from Chicago P.D., she has also appeared on other shows in the One Chicago franchise. Her character, Sergeant Trudy Platt, is married to Chicago Fire’s Senior Firefighter Randall "Mouch" McHolland, and hence, Morton is frequently seen in the series.

Trudy Platt is introduced as the Desk Sergeant at the 21st District in the first season of Chicago P.D. Before joining the team, she was a patrol officer who passed the detective exam twice but had to step back from fieldwork after being shot in the hip.

Trudy has a tough personality but cares about the people she works with. Though she often gives officers a hard time, she worries about them when they are in danger. For example, she is cold to Nadia, an intern, at first, but when Nadia gives her a birthday card, Trudy softens and helps Nadia work toward becoming a police officer.

When Nadia tragically dies, Trudy makes sure a memorial plaque is placed outside the district. Trudy’s relationship with Mouch McHolland is also a highlight of the show and the franchise. In the 2025 One Chicago crossover, both Trudy and Mouch face serious troubles.

While trying to arrest a man linked to a gas explosion, Trudy is ambushed and shot several times in the back. She falls to the ground and is found by her husband in a pool of blood. She is taken to the hospital, but her fate hangs in balance as she fights for her life.

Initially, it looks like Trudy would not be able to make it, but Chicago Med doctors Mitch Ripley and Caitlin Lenox are able to bring her back to life after much struggle. Trudy now continues to be a part of the show and serves as an inspiration to her juniors.

Chicago P.D. is currently in its twelfth season and airs new episodes on NBC on Wednesdays.
