The Netflix show Wednesday was released on November 16, 2022. It is popular among the young audience because of the drama, humor, mystery, and supernatural elements in the show. Wednesday is a 15-year-old girl with psychic abilities, but because of her cold personality, she interacts with only a few people in the show. One of the characters who she is closest to is Thing.

Thing, played by Victor Dorobantu, is a living hand that serves the Addams family. His character is sensitive, kind, and loyal, always by Wednesday’s side. Thing was not created from CGI and it was portrayed by a real actor. It was the decision of the director to use the real hand for the purpose of authenticity. It was done to make the conversation between Wednesday and Thing look more realistic. Let’s take a look at his career and the character he plays in Wednesday.

Victor Dorobantu played the role of Thing in the show, and he is a 27-year-old magician and illusionist from Romania. Wednesday is his first professional acting role, and the creator chose him for it because of his expressive hands, a result of his career as a magician. For the shoot, he had to wear a blue screen suit for VFX in order to hide his body in the scenes. In an interview with Vanity Fair, he shared that whenever it was possible, he tried to his body to lessen the work of the VFX team. During the shoot, he would hide under beds, in holes, trapdoors, back doors, and behind objects to hide his body.

He shared that he didn’t use that much body language and tried to make small gestures. He studied American Sign Language, hand gestures used by the military during war, and created his own language. In a video of Still Watching Netflix, the VFX supervisor Tom Turnbull shared that Victor was selected because the makers wanted someone who had nimble fingers who could perform all the moves, and was young enough to fit into awkward situations.

Thing is a living hand who serves the Addam family and stays close to Wednesday at Nevermore Academy. He was sent there by Wednesday’s family to watch over her and give updates to them. At first, she didn’t want him to be there with her and spy for her mom. She gave him a choice to either leave or follow her orders. He chose to be her servant and stay with her. Over time, they became closer and he stood by her in every situation and protected her. He helped her in investigating the murders which took place in the town.

While living with Wednesday, he formed a bond with Enid, and they became friends. Enid and Thing did makeup tutorials together and he gave her moisturizing tips. In Episode 7, Wednesday asks Thing to guard the diary which has information about Hyde. When Wednesday returns to her dorm from her date with Tyler, she finds out that the diary was stolen and Thing was badly injured. It was one of the emotional moments of the show as Wednesday was afraid that she would lose him.

Thing is one of the most important characters in the show, despite the fact that he didn’t have any dialogue. He will be a part of Season 2 and will continue to help Wednesday in solving murder mysteries.
