Taylor Sheridan is keen on expanding his Neo-Western Yellowstone Universe. The show's popularity has fueled many possible spin-offs, as confirmed by the director.
1883, the second installment and prequel to Yellowstone, premiered in December 2021. In addition, another project, reportedly called Yellowstone: 6666, was also announced in 2021.
While the details and progress on the latter are very slim, the 6666 in the title is not just a coincidence. It refers to a 6666 Ranch in West Texas that Taylor Sheridan purchased in 2021. It was owned by Samuel Burk Burnett in 1900.
The ranch's popularity has made it a part of many commercials. Earlier in the day, parts of movies like Mackintosh and T.J. were also said to have been filmed on the ranch in 1975.
Considering that the Yellowstone Universe is a big passion project for the director and has also gained a large audience, it is no surprise that Sheridan decided to make this purchase.
More about the history of the 6666 Ranch, owned by Taylor Sheridan, in our story.
How did the West Texas Ranch get its name? Exploring the historic property owned by Taylor Sheridan
The Louisville Land and Cattle Company sold this ranch to Samuel Burk Burnett in 1900. Many folklores are associated with its historic name 6666 or the four sixes.
One of the most common folklore is that Burnett won the ranch in a card game with four sixes and hence named it after that. However, his descendants have denied this, saying the ranch is named after the first breed cultivated there, which was branded 6666.
After Burnett died in 1920, Anne Valliant Burnett Tandy inherited the ranch, purchasing two show horses for it. Until the 1960s, the ranch earned a good reputation and was used in television commercials, one of them for Marlboro, the cigarette brand.
In 1980, the ranch was passed on to Anne Windfohr Marion, who listed it for $347.7 million in the market in her will after she passed away in February 2020.
The Ranch was finally purchased by Sheridan, the creator of Yellowstone, in 2021.
How much did Taylor Sheridan pay for the 6666 Ranch in West Texas?
This Ranch in Guthrie, Texas, has three divisions: 6666's Ranch in Guthrie, Dixon Creek Ranch, and Frisco Creek Ranch.
Seems like Taylor Sheridan wants the whole deal on expanding his Yellowstone franchise. He purchased the Ranch in 2021 for $320 million. The ranch is said to be twice as big as Chicago.
General Manager Joe Leathers proceeded with the sale of this historic property, who was not keen on selling it to Taylor Sheridan and the company initially. With Sheridan's whole Yellowstone franchise, Leathers did not want to taint the sanctity of the ranch for TV but was convinced by Sheridan.
Sheridan reportedly enlisted investors to raise the extra $300,000 million needed for the purchase. Considering his hefty payment for the ranch, the director seems to have big plans to expand his Yellowstone franchise.
His earlier project, 1883, the prequel to Yellowstone, was also shot here. Sheridan has always prioritized authenticity in his projects, and the purchase of this 6666 ranch makes sense for the director, who is keen on expanding his neo-western Universe.
Yellowstone will return for Season 5 Part 2 on November 10, 2024.
