Nicholas Scratch is Agatha Harkness' son. He first appeared in Fantastic Four #185 in 1977. The character was written by Len Wein and graphically depicted by George Perez.

After his mother left New Salem to live a normal life, Nicholas turned against her. He led the people of the town to abduct Agatha, who was nearly burnt. However, she was saved and began to turn the tables on Nicholas.
Nicholas Scratch was exiled to the Dark Realm and eventually became a servant of Dormammu, whom he hoped to supplant as the Sorcerer Supreme. Some years later, Nicholas allied himself with Mephisto, the Marvel Universe's embodiment of the Devil.
