Taylor Sheridan's Special Ops Lioness Season 2 was released on Paramount+ on October 27, 2024, following a successful run in Season 1.
The story follows an undercover program that hires female assassins to carry out various secret missions in different parts of the world. The group is led by Joe McNamara.
Lioness Season 2 saw the main cast return, which includes Zoe Saldaña as Joe, the officer in charge of the secret program. Nicole Kidman’s Kaitlyn Meade, Joe's recruiter and a senior CIA supervisor, also returned in Season 2.
Morgan Freeman played the role of Edwin Mullins, the U.S. Secretary of State, in Lioness Season 1. Despite only making a few appearances as a recurring character, Freeman was included in the main cast and made a comeback for Season 2.
More about Freeman's character in Lioness Season 2 in our story.
Morgan Freeman's Edwin Mullins became a series regular in Lioness Season 2
Edwin Mullins only appeared for three episodes in Lioness Season 1. He debuted in Episode 6 when Joe meets with her boss, Kaitlyn Meade, and Byron Westfield in the White House. As the US Secretary, Cullins is often seen sitting across the table from Kaitlyn and Byron as they discuss the program's next mission.
Season 2 follows Joe and her team as they are recruited to find intel for a Texas Congresswoman who has been kidnapped. This caused some rift between Joe and Mullins as she demanded that they are assassins and that gathering intel is not a part of their work. However, Mullins disregards her demand and orders her to confiscate phones and laptops after they kill the targets and only gives her three weeks for the operation when Joe asks for three months.
While Mullins' job is to work with the CIA to work on any loose threads and maintain the sanctity of their program, he is often at odds with Joe, especially when she goes off the books to make her mission successful. This causes some friction between them, but Freeman's character's involvement in Lioness Season 2 brought more substance to the socio-political landscape of the series.
Morgan Freeman agreed to be a part of Lioness Season 2 because of Sheridan
While Freeman's Mullins was not among the show's main cast, it was speculated whether the actor would appear in Lioness Season 2. But in an interview with Collider, Freeman discussed how he is a Taylor Sheridan fan and felt like this role was written because of him, which is why he was happy to return as the main cast in Season 2,
''...it's a Taylor Sheridan project, and I'm just, number one, thrilled to be in that loop. Number two, it's an incredible cast that I work with—Zoe and Nicole and Michael and Bruce. Just that alone is enough. To top it all off, I'm paid to do it.''
While Freeman did justice to his character in every sense, his elevation in the Season 2 main cast increased the story's stakes and made Joe's missions even more impactful. He provided much-needed friction within the CIA, which made the show compelling and a must-watch.
Lioness Season 2 concluded on December 8, 2024.
