Max's Dune: Prophecy finally wrapped its season 1 with a shocking finale on December 23, 2024, which sets the show for an even more complicated Season 2.

Based on Dune's author Frank Herbert's son, Brian, and Kevin J. Anderson's novel Sisterhood of Dune, Max series is set 10,000 years before Denis Villenueve's Dune movies and follows the story of the formation of the Bene Gesserit.

Among other things, the most shocking event of the finale left the Imperium without an Emperor and it would be interesting to see who will inherit the throne after Corrino. After his daughter, Princess Ynez, has fled to Arrakis, it is likely that either Empress Natalya or Desmond Hart will become the next Emperor, seeing from their influence over the Imperium.

Why did Emperor Javicco Corrino take his life in the Dune: Prophecy Season 1 finale?

In one of the most shocking twists in Dune: Prophecy Season 1, Emperor Javicco Corrino turned his blade upon himself and took his own life in the finale. He was forced to take this huge step after he realized that his whole life and the title that came with it were orchestrated by Valya and the Sisterhood.

The finale saw Javicco realize that the throne he has adorned since Season 1 was an inflated title, betrothed to him not because he deserved it but because Valya and the Sisterhood wanted him to be on it. A further catalyst in his action was the discovery that Valya no longer needed him on the throne, and Sister Francesca was brought in to kill him.

After Javicco listens to the truth about his life from Francesca, he realizes that his whole life was a lie, planned by Valya, and he never had a true moment in it. So, as a way to take charge of his life for the first time, he kills himself and embraces a moment of freedom from what Valya has pre-determined for him, i.e., to be killed by Francesca.

Who could likely claim the Emperor's throne in Dune: Prophecy Season 2?

After Javicco's death in the Dune: Prophecy finale, there is a mystery about who will succeed him and take his place as the emperor on the show.

While his daughter Princess Ynez was the likely contender to inherit the throne to the Imperium after her father's death, this doesn't seem to be happening as she has fleed to Arrakis with Keiran and Valya in the finale.

From the events that unfolded in the Season 1 finale, it can be speculated that Empress Natalya might soon head the throne as the Imperium's new Emperor. Not only does she get Ynez arrested in the finale, but she also has a strong alliance with Desmond and they have a strong hold over the Imperium.

Desmond has been a major threat to the Sisterhood since the show's inception and the secret about his bloodline as revealed in the show's penultimate episode means that he is capable of doing great things within the Imperium, which would create new problems for the Sisterhood.

Season 2 will likely see the beginning of Corrino's 10,000 years rule as seen in the Dune books, which hints that either Natalya or Desmond Hart could inherit the throne in Season 2.
