Missing You premiered on Netflix on January 1, 2025. As it is with Harlan Coben’s Netflix adaptations, this one is also full of unpredictable twists and turns where almost every character has something more up their sleeves than what the surface reveals.
Coben has previously also worked with Netflix, and a number of his novels have been adapted by the streamer, including The Stranger, Fool Me Once, and Stay Close, to name a few. Missing You is the latest addition to the list, and besides Coben's signature style of twisted storytelling, the show stands out because of its stellar cast.
Besides the likes of Rosalind Eleazar, Ashley Walters, and Richard Armitage, one notable name that features on the cast list of Missing You is Mary Malone, a rising trans actor whom fans might recognize from Fangirls and Doctor Who.
Let us now explore Mary Malone and her character Aqua in Missing You in detail.

Who is Mary Malone in Missing You?
Mary Malone is part of the supporting cast of Missing You, and since the show’s premiere, fans have been eager to learn more about her. Playing the role of Aqua, Mary’s character is shown to be Kate’s friend and used to be Josh’s (Ashley Walters) roommate.
After Josh ghosted Kat 11 years back, Aqua did not let it affect her and Kate’s friendship. However, with Josh’s reappearance on a dating site that Kat also signed up on, Aqua’s intentions and secrets seem to be delving deeper than Kat could have fathomed.
Mary Malone plays the role of Aqua skillfully, and though her IMDB page shows only eight projects under her name till now, she has already been a part of Doctor Who, one of the biggest hits of modern times.
She became a part of the Doctor Who universe in 2023 with the Christmas special titled "The Church on Ruby Road." She was cast as Trudy, one of Ruby Sunday's best friends.
She was also part of the first UK production of Yve Blake’s Fangirls. Her other projects include Chivalry, Vera, and The Prince. Talking about the first time she saw herself as Aqua in Missing Girls, she mentioned to Pink News,
“I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, who is this?’ Because that’s how I would feel seeing a trans person in a Harlan Coben series.”
She further added,
“Watching it now, I really was able to see myself as a part of it, and not just this tick-box person. So yeah, I think it’s sinking in that it’s a huge deal for me and my career.”
She also mentioned how important is the fact for her that the narrative of Missing You does not treat her as just another trans character, saying,
“She is intertwined in the complex spider web that is Missing You. She’s woven in. She’s not this trans side character. She’s an essential part of the narrative.”
Malone mentioned that her character, Aqua in Missing You, is a complete believer in astronomy and a Gemini. Talking about her relationship with Kat on the show, she mentioned Aqua and Kat has
“like a mother and daughter energy, but also it switches between them both frequently. Aqua has just really always got her back and has been there through the hardest times.”
What happens to Mary Malone’s Aqua in Missing You?
While it gradually becomes clear that Aqua has more secrets than is understandable at first glance, it is only revealed later that she had seen Clint and Parker hugging the night Parker died. This naturally startled Clint, and he went to Aqua to beg her not to tell Kat about his affair.
Aqua reassures him that she won’t tell Kat anything but also asks him to tell her the truth himself. This does not pacify Clint as he sees Kat calling Aqua that very moment. As Clint appears to be increasingly aggressive, Aqua gets hold of a knife to protect herself.
While all this fiasco is happening, Josh reaches Aqua's place and accidentally stabs Clint in an effort to save Aqua. Stagger also reaches there as it was from him that Clint took Aqua’s address.
To salvage the situation and to ensure that Kat never knows the truth, Stagger pins Clint’s murder on Monte Leburne, an already convicted criminal. This also means Aqua remains safe both from Clint and the subsequent incidents that occurred.
