In the first series of The Diplomat, a bomb exploded near a British ship in Iran. Kate is called in by the Prime Minister to help him save his country, but at the end of The Diplomat’s season 1, another bomb explodes again, and Kate's husband Hal and her colleagues are caught in the blast.

She naturally assumes that the attacks are all connected. After connecting all these confusing events, she believes Trowbridge is the culprit. This revelation leads to the main plot of Season 2.

As it happens, it is revealed Trowbridge is innocent. The bomb on one of his ships was planted by his employee, Margaret Roylin. Margaret was one of Trowbridge's staff. She helped plan a terrorist attack against her own country.

When Trowbridge discovered what she was doing, the Prime Minister grabbed her by the throat and nearly strangled her to death. She then fell and hit her head but miraculously survived.

Margaret's drastic measures seem to come from a sense of unity. She explains that with Scotland moving towards secession and Russia closing in on the borders, drastic measures are needed for the kingdom to remain united.

When Eidra and Kate hide Roylin in the US Embassy, Roylin doesn’t talk to the Americans - she wants Dennison. Now, they have to devise a plan to get the British Foreign Secretary to the American Embassy. Roylin advises Eidra to ask Kate to do it.

Kate does call Dennison. When he arrives, he's less than thrilled that the Americans have put him before Roylin in the locked room with Dennison, Kate, and Eidra. Roylin reveals that Lenkov was hired by "British citizens" to fire the missile at the warship. But the only name she'll give is Grove.

That doesn't help now that Grove is dead. Dennison thinks he knows who Grove was working with Trowbridge and Roylin. Roylin explains that Grove became extreme and was supposed to meet Hal but was muzzled. She makes them understand that Grove's reason for the attack was to stop the secessionist movement in Scotland. He needed such a "unifying event" to keep the UK intact.

Both seasons of The Diplomat are available to stream on Netflix.
