Almost fifteen years ago, the entire USA couldn't believe that one of the famous NFL players Steve McNair met the most unexpected and tragic end. Known for his exceptional skills and contribution to his team, Steve McNair was regarded as a key player for the Tennessee Titans.
He was married and had four adorable children, but fate had something else in mind. Though Steve McNair was married to Mechelle since 1997, he started a romantic relationship with a 19-year-old woman after retiring in 2008.
McNair entered the NFL in 1995 and remained a successful footballer for years until his retirement in April 2008. He had a remarkable career and was leading a good life until he crossed paths with Sahel “Jenni” Kazemi, the waitress he fell for.
The two were spending time together, and as seen in Netflix's Untold: The Murder of Air McNair, the NFL player told Jenni he would soon get a divorce. However, the teenager couldn't handle her rage and was constantly suspicious.
Things turned wild on July 3, 2009, as Kazemi purchased a gun and asked McNair to meet at his Nashville condo. As revealed in the documentary, Sahel Kazemi shot Steve McNair with the weapon she had bought and then committed suicide. Read more to delve deep into the murder of Steve McNair.
NFL player Steve McNair was killed by his girlfriend Sahel Kazemi
Steve McNair used to be in the headlines for his football career, giving most of his life to the Tennessee Titans. However, on July 4, 2009, the deceased former player was on the news over his brutal murder, executed by none other than his girlfriend, Sahel “Jenni” Kazemi.
The Titans players often gathered at the Dave and Buster’s restaurant where Kazemi worked as a waitress, and McNair got interested in her. Despite being married, the former NFL star started dating her, and the two even enjoyed vacations as shown in Untold: The Murder of Air McNair.
The documentary also revealed recordings of Jenni's co-workers describing her relationship with McNair, and one of them said:
"She cared a lot about him. She was really excited about their relationship. He treated her really nicely... He wanted to take care of her."
But things didn't seem this smooth behind closed doors, as McNair told Jenni he was parting ways with Mechelle, but that wasn't the case. Additionally, Jenni was drowning in debt, and their relationship was strained.
As seen in Untold: The Murder of Air McNair, the former player's close pal and business partner Robert Gaddy arrived at McNair's condo on July 4, 2009 in the afternoon and was devasted to see his friend covered in blood.
While McNair's body was on the couch, there was a woman on the floor and a gun near her. She was identified to be Jenni, and after investigation, it was concluded that Sahel “Jenni” Kazemi shot Steve McNair multiple times during his sleep, and then she took her life.
What happened after Steve McNair's murder at his Nashville condo?
Soon after Gaddy identified his friend, he called 911 and the police began the investigation. As shown in the Netflix documentary, McNair's family didn't believe a 19-year-old would commit such a heinous crime and doubted someone else killed them.
Private investigator Vincent Hill requested to reopen the murder case in 2009 saying "Nashville police made a lot of mistakes", and the biggest was to believe every word Adrian Gilliam (the man who sold the gun to Jenni) said.
Gilliam is revealed to be a convicted felon of murder and armed robbery and told the police that she sold the gun to a girl he didn't know. However, the two exchanged almost 203 phone calls and messages in three weeks.
He was the last person Jenni had talked with just an hour and a half before she and Steve McNair were found dead. When Gilliam was asked about his whereabouts, he lied to the police about being at a friend's house.
The documentary also revealed that Jenni was flirting with Adrian Gilliam, and his friend even disclosed that the two were dating. The private investigator not only suspected Gilliam but also doubted Robert Gaddy's involvement in the murder.
Hill mentioned that Gaddy stole Steve McNair's money, thinking he wouldn't notice. But, the former player noticed things weren't right, and then he was found dead after a few days.
Gaddy denied any involvement in his best friend's murder, and the police didn't charge anyone. The case was closed as a murder-suicide, but many, including Jenni's family, believed she killed her boyfriend.
