Ransom Canyon is Netflix's latest contemporary Western show that recently came to an end. Throughout its ten episodes, Ransom Canyon chronicles the tale of Yancy Grey, Staten Kirkland, Quinn O'Grady, and others.
The character of Randall Kirkland, played by actor Hubert Smielecki, died early on in the show, and the mystery surrounding his death left a lasting impression on the plot of the show and the characters. It wasn't until the finale episode of Ransom Canyon that the identity of the one who caused Randall's death was revealed. Here's everything that we know.
Ransom Canyon: Randall Kirkland's death mystery explored in detail
Ransom Canyon unexpectedly killed Staten Kirkland's teenage son, Randall, in the premiere episode itself. He succumbed to the injuries sustained in a car accident. It was revealed then that Randall collided with a blue pick-up truck, and it is mentioned in passing that the driver might have been intoxicated. No witnesses were present at the site of the accident, and therefore, the authorities started searching for the elusive driver.
However, in a shocking twist, the finale episode of the show revealed that it was Sheriff Brigman's wife, Margaret, driving the pickup truck that night. She was returning home after a rendezvous with Kit, i.e., the small-time actor with whom Margaret was having an affair. After Kit came to know about the accident, he endeavored to take the blame upon himself while his friends Tim and Reid assisted Margaret in hiding the truck.
April Blair opens up about the mystery of Randall's death
Ransom Canyon creator April Blair recently gave an exclusive interview to the Daily Gazette magazine, wherein she spoke at length about the importance of Randall's death mystery in the Netflix show's narrative. When asked about giving closure to the mystery, Blair explained:
"We’ve already started the writers’ room, even though the show hasn’t been picked up to series yet for Season 2, but we were already grappling with that, and what we wanted to do was kind of put to bed that loss, in a way. Not that Staten will ever get over the loss of his child, but we wanted to give him some hope and a little bit of lightness. Quinn’s going to go off to New York and come back. How is he going to win her back if he’s still haunted?"
She added:
"I don’t feel like he could ever truly move on in his heart and his mind until that mystery was settled. We wanted to find some closure with that, and also, who was behind it and what really happened opens up a whole new series of relationship drama between Lucas and Lauren, as you know. So it gives us a lot of runway in other stories as well."
All the episodes of Ransom Canyon are available exclusively on Netflix.
