Cobra Kai is nearing its conclusion, and hence the show has started to wrap up its characters’ storylines. The series recently aired its season 6 part 2 on Netflix, which depicts Cobra Kai competing with the best dojos from the world in the Sekai Taikai international karate tournament.
As the competition between the teams gets fierce, it leads to a deadly fate as Kwon Jae-Sung, played by Brandon H. Lee, dies at the end of the second part. The scene was not only surprising for the spectators at the tournament, but for the audience as well.
Kown dies one of the most gruesome deaths in the Karate Kid franchise as he gets impaled by a knife. However, he does not get killed by anyone else but himself as he accidentally stabs himself with a knife during a fight with Axel Kovačević.
Kwon accidentally kills himself during a fight with Axel Kovačević in Cobra Kai
Kwon dies in Cobra Kai season 6 after a chaotic turn of events in the Sekai Taikai semifinals. After getting eliminated from the competition, Cobra Kai gets another chance when the Russian dojo gets disqualified for using performance-enhancing drugs.
Things go out of control during the match between Robby, played by Tanner Buchanan, and Axel Kovačević, played by Patrick Luwis. Kwon becomes aggressive and elbows Robby in an illegal move, causing a huge fight to break out.
Miguel, played by Xolo Maridueña, runs in to defend Robby, and soon, everyone starts fighting, from the competitors to the senseis. The situation gets even worse when Kwon grabs a knife, called eunjangdo, and tries to use it against Axel, his arch-rival.
Kwon and Axel’s rivalry is in the spotlight throughout the sixth season, with the latter often defeating the former in matches with his sharp skills and tall height. This makes Kwon increasingly bitter towards Axel, and during the semi-final brawl, he sees a chance to end his enemy’s life.
As Kwon picks up the knife and marches toward Axel, the two get into a fight. While Axel defends himself against the attack, Kwon falls to the ground and accidentally impales himself. He collapses on the mat and starts to bleed.
The brawl stops as everyone watches in shock. Daniel tries to help Kwon, but it becomes clear that Kwon’s injury is too serious to be cured. Gunther, the tournament host, then orders to cut the live feed, ending the semifinals.
Brandon H. Lee reflects on Kwon’s death in Cobra Kai
Brandon H. Lee, who joined the martial arts drama in season 6 as Kwon, opened up about his character’s death on the Pop Culture Unplugged podcast. Lee said he felt honored when series co-creator Hayden Schlossberg told him about Kwon’s fate, as he becomes the first major character to die in the show.
“When Hayden told me Kwon was going to be the first major character to die, I was shocked but honored. It’s a historic moment for the series, and I wanted to do it justice. Having Ralph [Macchio] there in the final moments was surreal. The intensity on set was palpable, but everyone handled it with such care.”
Talking about how Kwon is a layered character, Lee said his storyline leaves several questions for the viewers:
“Kwon was a complex character. He had this raw intensity and a hunger to prove himself, but his story is also a cautionary tale. What could he have been if he’d had the right mentor? His arc leaves a lot of ‘what-ifs’ for fans to think about.”
The final five episodes of Cobra Kai will premiere on Netflix on February 13, 2025.
