The third season of Yellowjackets came to a recent conclusion; however, several questions regarding the fate of characters still remain. Although Akilah's death wasn't explicitly shown in the finale of Yellowjackets season three, a recently surfaced theory suggests that Lottie might have killed Akilah off-screen. This is further accentuated by the fact that Akilah was last seen on the Yellowjackets season three finale with Lottie during the cave scene.
Here's everything that we know.
Did Lottie kill Akilah on the Yellowjackets season 3 finale?
Lottie Matthews, played by Courtney Eaton, seemed drawn to and fixated on Nia Sondaya's Akilah throughout the third season of the show. Martinez's claim that Akilah was more in touch with the wild as compared to him only served to accentuate Lottie's fixation. This eventually led to Lottie trying her best to convince Akilah that the visions she's been having hold the key to a revelation of some sort. The two visited the cave together on multiple occasions.
Things are further stirred up when, in fulfillment of one of her visions, Akilah discovers that her animals are dead. Yellowjackets subsequently revealed that Akilah herself had sacrificed her animals in preparation for a sacrificial hunt. Lottie and Akilah then had a confrontation while Akilah was seen for the last time in the cave. The theory in question suggests that Akilah was murdered off-screen by Lottie in order to appease the forces that were expecting a sacrificial hunt.
Nia Sondaya speaks about the show and her character
Despite joining the rest of the cast during the show's second season, Sondaya quickly captured audience attention by virtue of her powerful and nuanced portrayal of Akilah. Speaking in an exclusive interview with TheThings, Sondaya expressed her initial reaction to being a part of the popular show:
"Joining the cast of Yellowjackets was super exciting, but also a little intimidating, I remember watching the show before meeting everyone and thinking that every single member of this cast is exceptional. I remember feeling a bit anxious to finally work with everyone knowing I was coming in for the second season. This was a pretty tight knit ensemble of actors so I just really wasn’t sure what to expect. Of Course everyone was extremely kind, welcoming and supportive."
She then went on to speak about her character:
"Stepping into the role of Akilah was multilayered, as I was very careful to match the portrayal of Akilah in the first season. I studied Keeya King’s work in the first season and it was very important for me that I keep the groundwork that she had laid out for the character. I think Keeya did beautiful work as Akilah in season one. She was Innocent yet brave, quiet but strong, she’s also incredibly intelligent. All of this was very important for me to maintain while also adding organic moments where Akilah can find her voice and confidently make space for herself in this group dynamic."
Yellowjackets is exclusively available on Showtime and Paramount+.
