Netflix's new limited series Apple Cider Vinegar will premiere on February 6, 2025. Produced by See-Saw Films known for shows like Slow Horses and Heartstopper, and created by Samantha Strauss (Nine Perfect Strangers, Dance Academy) follows the story of two women Belle Gibson and Milla who use their social media platforms to cure people.
Apple Cider Vinegar is based on the true story of a lie told by wellness guru Bele Gibson who is portrayed by Katelyn Dever. Apart from Dever who is known for shows like Dopesick and Unbelievable, the show also stars popular young actors Alicia- Debnam Carey(Fear The Walking Dead, The100), and Aisha Dee(The Bold Type).
However, one should realize, that while based on a true story some characters and events are a work of fiction. The official plot for Apple Cider Vinegar as written on Netflix is as follows:
Two young women advocate for wellness remedies to cure deadly illnesses, unraveling their lives as they unknowingly — and knowingly — mislead the world.
Who is Katelyn Dever's character Belle Gibson? explored in depth
Belle Gibson, played by Kaitlyn Dever in the series Apple Cider Vinegar, is a controversial Australian wellness influencer who falsely claimed to have cured her brain cancer using a healthy lifestyle and natural remedies.
Her lies gained her a huge following and economic success, and she built a health empire that turned her into a personality. Furthermore, she faked all of it; she never really had cancer, and her health-based claims never actually took place.
This brought an end to her reputation, blinding her from the dangers that misinformation could bring and how unchecked social media could operate in the field of wellness. Such stories like hers serve as good examples of an ultimatum on the ethics social media influencers had to abide by and the great harm they could cause in spreading unverified health tips.
Although Dever who plays Belle Gibson is an American actress, in Apple Cider Vinegar she flaunts an Australian accent which she acquired with the help of an Australian dialect coach to enhance her intonation and speech patterns.
In an interview with Netflix Tudum, she added:
“I love accent work in general, but there’s something about this accent in particular and how it allowed me to dive deep into someone else. It was really helpful for me to separate myself from the character.”
