Netflix's one of the best coming-of-age dramas is back as Outer Banks Season 4 Part 1 ended with a twist no fan might have ever expected. Before the latest season ends with Part 2, viewers were stunned by the startling twist at the end of episode 5 titled Albatross.

Outer Banks debuted on the streamer in 2020 and became a popular teen drama. The show revolves around teenagers who belong to working-class families and their conflict with Kooks, the elite group who never misses a chance to mess with Pogues (less fortunate teenagers).

As the first season progressed, John B Routledge discovered his father had disappeared during a treasure hunt, and now he has to continue the quest. John reached out to his best friends JJ Maybank, Pope Heyward, and Kiara Carrera, and together, the Pogues began the journey.

Following the treasure hunt, the Pogues discovered hidden secrets about their hometowns, families, and identities. The most shocking twist since the first season is about JJ's parentage, as he recently discovered he was born as a Kook and Chandler Groff was his real dad. Yes, even Rudy Pankow was shocked to learn that his on-screen character didn't know his biological parents until season 4, part 1, ended.

Since the first season, Outer Banks enthusiasts have never doubted the Pogues' parentage. Not even once. Especially JJ, who's considered the Pogue-iest among his group members. However, the fifth episode of season 4 revealed the most unexpected twist: Luke Maybank isn't JJ's biological father, as JJ was born to Larissa Genrette and Chandler Groff.

So, this makes JJ the grandson of Wes Genrette, the man with whom the Pogues made a deal at the beginning of the fourth season. This revelation comes after the group discovers El Dorado, and JJ's carelessness while spending the wealth leads them to Wes Genrette.

The Pogues agreed to find Blackbeard's wife's amulet for $50,000 without knowing the treasure hunt would reveal deep-hidden secrets. As the first part ends, JJ receives a letter from Wes, which he wrote before his death. In the letter, Wes Genrette told JJ to ask Luke about Albatross, leaving him incredibly curious about what it meant.

After watching the last episode of Outer Banks Season 4 Part 1, fans and viewers might have understood why the fifth episode was titled Albatross. After JJ read the letter, he called Luke, who said he was in a jungle. However, JJ knew that Luke was around, and he found him.

JJ finally confronts Luke at Mike's house and asks him to reveal what Albatross means. Luke initially lied that he didn't know what Wes Genrette meant in the letter, and told JJ to stay out of this.

However, in the end, Luke revealed to JJ that Albatross was a boat in which Larissa Genrette was last seen before she died by drowning. He later explained that Genrette was his biological mother. This wasn't just a shock for fans but for JJ as he couldn't believe he was a Kook who lived as a Pogue.

As revealed by Luke, he was "trying to help" after Larissa Genrette died and left an infant behind. He didn't explain the reason in detail, and viewers can expect to explore more about the truth in Outer Banks Season 4 Part 2, which will arrive on Netflix on November 7, 2024.

Luke also told JJ to feel proud to be Genrette's son, as she wasn't an evil Kook. It was revealed why Larissa Genrette wanted to hide JJ's identity, possibly because of the family curse or saving him from Chandler Groff.

However, the truth is out now, and Groff might finally learn that JJ is his son. If this happens, Groff might not open his arms for JJ and instead pose more dangerous threats to him. Additionally, his group members' reactions would be notable when they learn that JJ was born to a Kook.
