Based on Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander novel series, the historical drama show of the same name has introduced one of its most tragic characters, Jane Pocock. Played by Silvia Presente, the character has had a tumultuous past. She was forced to choose prostitution to sustain herself and her siblings, since she lost her parents at a young age.

Jane makes her first appearance in Outlander Season 7 Episode 12, and in that episode she meets William Ransom (Charles Vandervaart). The narrative so far seems to suggest the two might have some hope for the future.

In Episode 12, William saves Jane from atrocities of the British soldier, Captain Harkness. Instead of demanding any kind of service, William then lets Jane sleep, which shows the two characters, despite their initial misgivings, have started forming a genuine connection.

Silvia Presente discussed William Ransom with TVLine, saying:

"Initially, when she meets William, she thinks he's just a bit naïve, a bit ignorant. He's not unlike any of the other clients she's ever had before."

Her relationship with William seems to be developing into something beyond what Jane would share with a client. Let us explore in detail who Jane Pocock is in Outlander Season 7, and how she is presented in the books.

Who is Jane Pocock in Outlander Season 7?

**Spoilers ahead**

Fans who are familiar with the Outlander books know that Jane unfortunately dies, though that does not change the fact that she would leave a lasting impact on other major characters, including William, and Claire and Jamie Fraser.

In Outlander Season 7 Episode 12, Jane makes her first appearance, initially identified as Arabella in the story. She meets William for the first time when he comes to the brothel she works in. Their first meeting is anything but nice.

William finds Arabella to be rude and a miscommunication occurs between the two, which leads to William being thrown out of the brothel. However, this does not stop William and Jane from meeting again, as he returns to the brothel with a bunch of British soldiers.

Things take a turn for the worse at this point. One of the soldiers, Captain Harkness, starts bidding for Jane with plans to inflict brutalities on her throughout the night. William decides to outbid him and save Jane.

After outbidding Captain Harkness, however, William does not demand any service from Jane. Rather, he lets her sleep. His gesture changes Jane's perception about him and the two start getting romantically closer.

Their encounter does not end with the night, though. The two meet again when Jane turns up rather unexpectedly at William’s camp in Episode 14, with her sister Fanny. Jane had visited William with the intention of seeking protection but, unaware of the fact, he gets her a job at the camp.

Soon , William learns that Jane does not know anything about money — how to spend or use it — because, having been involved in prostitution from an early age of 10, she never received any money. Her wages were never given to her.

Jane eventually reveals to William that she was not at the camp looking for a job. Rather, she needed protection because she had killed Captain Harkness. She adds how Harkness wanted to sleep with Fanny and that was unacceptable. Jane had fatally attacked the Captain with a knife and the sisters had escaped from the brothel and come straight to William.

How does Jane Pocock’s arc end as per the Outlander books?

Outlander Season 7 is two episodes away from the finale at the time of publishing, which means viewers will be seeing Jane’s story completing its arc. As mentioned, Jane dies tragically in the books despite William helping her and Fanny escape. Some men recognize Jane, as the murderer of Harkness, following which she is captured and hanged.

As per the book Go Tell The Bees That I Am Gone, Fanny’s fate turns out to be better than Jane’s because she is adopted by Claire and Jamie. Thus, while Jane could not get the life she deserved, her sister can look forward to a future she always hoped to give her.

Outlander can be streamed on Netflix
