The tragic case of Judy Orr Baldwin left her community reeling in 2016 when authorities thought the accident was caused by some sort of usual incident. But investigators discovered a much darker truth: her husband, James Harold Baldwin Jr., had planned it all to seem like a series of unfortunate accidents.

James Harold Baldwin is a former police officer and dispatcher. He was arrested in 2018 and was later convicted of first-degree murder. He was sentenced to a life sentence without the possibility of parole. Baldwin is serving his life sentence in a South Carolina prison.

He started serving his sentence on August 14, 2018, and has been working as a Wardkeeper Assistant. He has had no disciplinary infractions during his incarceration but has not pursued any educational programs or certifications. The case is explored in Oxygen's Accident, Suicide, or Murder. The episode will air on January 4, 2025, Saturday at 8/7c.

Who is James Harold Baldwin?

James Harold Baldwin is a former policeman for the York and Columbia Police Departments, while later becoming a dispatcher for the Chester County Sheriff's Office. His knowledge as a police officer gave him insights about the investigation procedure, something which he was reportedly using in plotting his wife's death: Judy Orr Baldwin.

Judy was the beloved member of her community whom Baldwin married for four years before her untimely death on December 14, 2016. That night, Judy fell while putting Christmas decorations in the garage of the house. Baldwin said he found her bleeding, put her in his Jeep, and then tried to drive her to the hospital.

Along the way, he claimed he took a detour to avoid a collision with a truck, and the Jeep ran off the road and crashed into an embankment. However, Judy's family and the police were not that easily convinced.

Only two months after her death, Baldwin started living with another woman, Teri King. In addition to this, the evidence that the investigators found told a story of premeditated murder.

How was James Harold Baldwin's crime uncovered?

South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) became a significant witness in revealing the truth about Judy Orr Baldwin's death. From the word go, several red flags stood out from the story of Baldwin that did not make sense considering the evidence that emerged after the investigation process.

SLED investigators found inconsistencies in Judy's injuries. Her skull fracture was so severe that it would have rendered her unable to speak or remain conscious during the alleged drive to the hospital, directly contradicting James Harold Baldwin's account.

In addition, autopsy results showed blunt force trauma inconsistent with a fall or car crash, suggesting that she may have been beaten before her death. Evidence at the scene further proved to undermine Baldwin's claims. Investigators found blood evidence in the couple's home that did not match his description of an accidental fall in the garage.

Tire marks at the crash site showed that Baldwin was in full control of the vehicle before it left the road, which was contradictory to his story of swerving to avoid a collision. A financial motive also emerged during the investigation. James Harold Baldwin had taken out a $25,000 accidental death insurance policy in Judy's name just months before her death, naming himself as the sole beneficiary.

In addition, there were text messages between James Harold Baldwin and Teri King, another woman, that hinted at a romantic affair. This further raised suspicions, pointing towards a motive in Judy's murder and strengthening the case against Baldwin.

James Harold Baldwin was arrested and convicted

Baldwin was taken into custody in August 2018, nearly two years after Judy died. Prosecutors claimed that he had attacked his wife at their home, made up a car accident as a cover for the crime, and called police to conclude his big scheme.

During his 2019 trial, Judy's son Josh Orr testified emotionally, recalling how Baldwin had been evasive and refused to answer questions about his mother's final moments. The jury deliberated for just over a week before convicting Baldwin of first-degree murder. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Despite the overwhelming evidence, Baldwin maintained his innocence, claiming Judy’s death was a tragic accident. In December 2022, his appeal was rejected by a South Carolina court, which upheld his conviction.
