Following the success of The Night Agent in its first season, it is fair to say that Season 2 of the Netflix show had a high bar to scale. The second season of The Night Agent has performed fairly well, providing a fitting continuation to the debut season. Among the various characters on the second installment of The Night Agent, Jacob Monroe, played by actor Louis Herthum, merits particular attention.

As is widely known, The Night Agent portrays the shadowy world of spycraft and international espionage. In this world, morality is a relative issue, and all that happens could have far-reaching consequences for the parties involved. Jacob Monroe seems like a man who is right at home in this gray world.

Monroe is described in The Night Agent as an intelligence broker. His sole occupation is gathering sensitive and top secret information, and then selling it to the highest bidder. Other than earning a handsome profit in the process, Monroe has no other responsibility.

Gabriel Basso's Peter Sutherland first comes in contact with Monroe during the Bangkok mission. FBI Agent Peter and cybersecurity expert Rose Larkin (Luciane Buchanan) eventually discover that Monroe has been selling information to war criminal Viktor Bala (Dikran Tulaine). The information in question relates to the details of Operation Foxglove, a top secret chemical weapons program.

Here's everything we know:

The Night Agent: Jacob Monroe's character explored in detail

Through a discussion with Peter on The Night Agent Season 2, Monroe makes it obvious that morality is not part of his business. He isn't concerned about the people who may die as a result of the knowledge he sells, and the only person he exhibits empathy for is his right hand man, Solomon, played by Berto Colon.

Still, Monroe is prepared to make bargains as long as they promote his interests, including betraying war criminal Viktor Bala when he sees an opportunity to gain data that is considerably more valuable to him.

Monroe's purpose in Bangkok was to obtain information on Project Foxglove from the source, and resell it to Bala and his team. In retrospect, Monroe's public appearance may have been a mistake, since it indicates Peter knows what he looks like and that a mystery player was engaged in the Bangkok catastrophe.

Jacob Monroe subsequently tries to correct this after Peter has apprehended Warren for questioning. He has Warren killed by a sniper and attempts to persuade Peter to give himself up in return for Rose's life. Peter gets out of that jam, but when their interests coincide in the last episodes of The Night Agent Season 2, they make a bargain.

Gabriel Basso opens up on his character

In an exclusive interview with Deadline, Season 2 star Gabriel Basso opened up about the inner workings of his character Peter. Asked if Peter has trust issues, Basso replied:

"I’m not sure he trusts … I mean, he trusts Rose, but it’s also, what can he entrust to her? I think he’s walking that line, if he might have trust for her, but she’s not read in on a lot of this stuff, and he doesn’t want to put her at risk. So even though he could tell her the truth, should he tell her the truth? And that responsibility weighs on him. As far as his relationship with Catherine goes, I think they both have a mutual hesitancy to trust one another completely."

The Night Agent is exclusively available on Netflix.
