Richard’s Life in Friends
Richard's onscreen debut is in "The One Where Ross And Rachel...You Know". He has planned a party, and Monica and Phoebe cater it. His reaction when he sees how skinny she is implies that he hasn't seen her in years. He seems to prefer talking to Monica over taking care of his ophthalmologist's guests throughout the party.
Despite the fact that they are 21 years apart in age, Monica appears drawn to him. Monica is described by Phoebe as "so much the smitten kitten." Although she tries to deny it, she is caught when she admits that she has an eye appointment with him even though she is only getting her eyes checked.
Richard and Monica attempt to keep their relationship platonic during their eye visit, but they give in and share a passionate kiss. The two then begin dating and form a genuine relationship with each other.
Richard is eventually questioned by Monica about their plans. He imagines them in a happy marriage without children in Paris. However, Monica is eager to start a family of her own but avoids the topic since she thinks it would be awkward. She and Richard return to the topic at Barry and Mindy's wedding, but neither of them has changed their stance.
While dancing, Richard says he doesn't want to lose Monica and promises to have children with her if necessary. Monica was initially thrilled about it, but she soon came to the realization that she wants a child with someone who truly wants to, not just has to. As a result, the two split up.
Richard’s final appearance in Friends
It takes Monica months to recover from the break-up. However, the two cross paths a few times later in the series. When Richard finally shows up, he interrupts Chandler's plans to pop the question to Monica and declares that he is ready to marry and start a family. When he sees that they are content together and that Chandler is willing to give her the same thing, he gives in.
