He was the former Head of Plastic Surgery and attending ENT at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital and was one of the lead doctors who moved to this hospital from Mercy West Medical Center after the merger. In his career, Jackson was also shown to be a member of the board and the de facto board chairman.

In the series, Jackson Avery was initially married to April Kepner with whom he went on to have 2 kids - a daughter named Harriet Kepner-Avery and a son named Samuel Norbert Avery. Jackson and April’s son Samuel had tragically passed away after birth due to osteogenesis imperfecta type II.
