Who is Chris in Family Guy?

Christopher Cross Griffin, better known as Chris, is a fictional character from the animated television series Family Guy. He is the older brother of Stewie Griffin and the younger brother of Meg Griffin. Voiced by American actor, producer, and writer Seth Green, he made his television debut on January 31, 1999, in the episode "Death Has a Shadow" alongside the other members of the Griffin family.


After being requested to submit a pilot proposal to the Fox Broadcasting Company, the show's creator, Seth MacFarlane, devised and developed Chris Griffin. The first episode of the show was based on two shorts by MacFarlane, The Life of Larry and Larry & Steve, about a middle-aged guy named Larry and an intelligent dog named Steve.

Chris is portrayed as an average adolescent, much like his older sister Meg, but one who comes out as laid-back and friendly. As a result, the character seems to appreciate his place in life and tries to take things in stride, not worrying too much.


Chris seems prepared to go to extreme lengths to satisfy his academic requirements, particularly to boost his below-average marks. In one episode, he believes he had a poor score on his geometry test because he accidentally punctured a lobe in his brain while tickling it with a plastic army man's gun that was placed in his nose.


Though he frequently displays Peter's typical ignorance, Chris is usually seen as a quicker learner than Peter and has a range of skills, including video editing and filmmaking. Of all the family members, Chris is the only one who picks up Cockney English quickly. Also, he is cartoonishly naïve, absent-minded, easily confused, and shares his father's lack of common sense.

Chris generally loves and cares about Meg very much, and the two are usually shown to get along well, even if she is frequently embarrassed or humiliated by his acts, just as she is by Peter's. Chris's social standing at James Woods Regional High School is drastically diminished as the series goes on and Meg is seen with her group of friends more frequently, making him friendless. Despite being just as socially despised as Meg (albeit less bullied), he exhibits confidence and a lively personality, especially when navigating the highs and lows of youth.


Chris is constantly tormented by the Evil Monkey, who resides in his closet, as a running gag that began in the episode "Dammit Janet!" However, whenever he complains about it to anyone, they frequently laugh with him instead, assuming it is a joke. The Evil Monkey then makes an evil grimace and points at Chris menacingly and frighteningly.


Seth MacFarlane said in a 2003 interview that because Chris has "a childlike mind," the authors felt it would be humorous to give him a childhood fear that is real. It was author Mike Barker who came up with the monkey's signature pointing and grimacing.
