Bonnie first appeared in the "A Hero Sits Next Door" episode of the show. Despite being far more composed than her husband Joe, Bonnie struggles to control his tantrums. She stated in "A Hero Sits Next Door" that she is unable to refuse her husband. This changes in "Believe It or Not, Joe's Walking on Air" when Joe gets new legs, turns into a jerk, and breaks up with Bonnie. She attempts to shoot him in the back, crippling him, but fails several times, which then forces Joe to shoot himself.

When she believes her marriage to Joe is becoming lifeless, she travels to Paris, France with Lois to have an affair, which is when their marriage starts to show signs of strain in "Foreign Affairs." Joe convinces Bonnie to return after Lois calls him. Bonnie leaves Joe in "Internal Affairs" as he considers having an affair of his own.

Following Joe's story of meeting Bonnie while working as a stripper, Peter and Lois use the information to effectively reunite the two. Bonnie in "The Most Interesting Man in the World" seems to grow aggressive at a handicapped target on the shooting range. The house she chooses for "Brian the Closer" has a sliding glass door and purposely leans on its foundation toward a cliff. When Joe in "Brokeback Swanson" is rendered crippled, she leaves him to travel to Europe.

Joseph "Joe" Swanson is Bonnie’s husband in the show. They have two kids: Susie and Kevin. He works as a macho paraplegic police officer for the Quahog Police Department and often struggles with severe anger management.

In addition to Peter, Quagmire, and Cleveland, he is the fourth friend who lives on Spooner Street. When the Happy-Go-Lucky Toy Factory required a last player for their workplace baseball team after he had recently moved to Quahog, he met Peter.

Peter was unaware that Joe was paralyzed below the waist, but he was aware that Joe had previously won many prizes for his baseball skills. Joe, however, showed that this was insufficient to discourage him and led the team to victory, as he usually does. He and his family reside at 33 Spooner Street.
