Christopher Herrmann (David Eigenberg) has been a fan-favorite character since the beginning of Chicago Fire. At the end of season 12, when Boden (Eamonn Walker) was promoted to the CFD, he tapped Herrmann as his successor, although Dom Pascal took over the CFD role.

The premiere of Chicago Fire saw the introduction of the new chief, Pascal (Dermot Mulroney). This twist was however cleared in the premiere itself as it was revealed that Herrmann could not take the captain’s test as he got sick before the exam.

He plans to take it the next time it is arranged and the exam is coming up soon. However, Herrmann’s character was surprisingly absent from the sixth and seventh episodes of Chicago Fire. No explanation was also provided for his absence.

But, much to the fans’ relief, Herrmann will be back in episode 8, titled Quicksand. Let us now explore in detail Herrmann’s character in Chicago Fire, his absence from two episodes, and coming back in future episodes.

Christopher Herrmann is a veteran firefighter and commanding officer for Engine 51’s second shift. The character was introduced in the pilot episode of Chicago Fire and since then has been a series regular.

Married to Cindy Herrmann, Christopher is the father of five children. He is quite dutiful in his professional life and in season 13, he was supposed to be promoted to the chief’s position, which unfortunately has not happened yet.

When will Herrman be back on Chicago Fire?

As per the official logline of Chicago Fire Season 13 Episode 8, Herrman will be back in this episode. The logline reads,

“Herrmann and Mouch prepare to take their officer exams; Cruz receives a chilling omen; Carver takes care of a dog after its owner is injured on a call."

This proves that he will be back and will be taking the exam the results of which are sure to have far-reaching consequences not only in his life but also on the team. If he manages to pass the test, it remains to be seen whether he will be taking over Pascal or get transferred to take charge. However, if he fails, or something else happens, Herrmann will be staying back in his current position.

Regarding the character's absence and the subsequent scheduled return, David Eigenberg, who plays Herrmann on Chicago Fire told TV Insider,

“He’s not prepared. He’s got a wife and kids. He’s not very focused of a human being. He’s focused when the chips are down. He’s a little bit like my mother and father in real life. When the chips were down, they were there for each other and the rest of the time it was a maelstrom. So I think he’s a little bit in that vein.”

Eigenberg further mentioned that nothing goes easy for Herrmann and self-confidence is not the character’s strongest suit, adding,

“I think the character knows what’s right. He doesn’t always know what’s the exact right thing to do, and he has to be steered by other people.”

Since his return is confirmed, when asked if Herrmann is ready to take on a leadership role in Fire51 or anywhere else, Eigenberg mentioned to NBC,

“Do the pants fit? Do the shoes fit?...With the chief role, I would step into it, but you don't prepare for it. I mean, you do, but how does life unfold? You never know."

Where is Herrmann now in Chicago Fire?

Generally, when the main characters are absent from certain episodes of a show, the story uses other characters to explain their absence. However, no such thing was done for Herrmann’s character regarding his two-episode absence in Chicago Fire Season 12.

Without any explanation given behind his absence, it can nonetheless be speculated that since he would be appearing for the captain’s test in the next episode, he is busy preparing for the exam, and that is why was MIA.

With his return confirmed in episode 8, it remains to be seen how his exam goes and what new direction it takes Herrmann’s character.

Chicago Fire can be streamed on Peacock.
