Cobra Kai, the sequel to the famous Karate Kid franchise, initially started as a YouTube original but is now streaming on Netflix. Gianni DeCenzo was born on October 27, 2001. His parents run the Respite Agency which caters to people who have developmental disabilities and intellectual handicaps while Gianni's brother Anthony himself is on the autism spectrum and has been diagnosed with severe OCD. DeCenzo lives in the Santa Clarita Valley with his brother.
Gianni reportedly draws material from personal life in preparation for his characters. He grew up in an atmosphere that nourished the arts and asked his mother if he could appear on television when he was eight. His mother, who herself had been bitten by the acting bug in her youth, took some portfolio photos of her son and got him an agent.
As a child artist, Gianni performed in several commercials for brands such as Sears, Subway, Sutter Health, and Geico Honda. He then scored a few secondary roles before getting his big break on Cobra Kai. Apart from the show, he has also appeared on NCIS as Owen and on NCIS Los Angeles as Lake Austin.
Gianni DeCenzo opens up about Cobra Kai and his preparation for the role
The character of Demetri has been one of the significant milestones in Gianni DeCenzo's career. Speaking in an interview with What's On Netflix earlier this year in March, he opened up at length about his character, the show itself, and his preparation for the role.
When asked about how he came to be associated with the martial arts show, Gianni stated:
"I was 16 years old, and I was kind of going through this weird growth period where I was tall enough to play older characters, but they were looking for people 18 and older to play those characters. So I wasn’t getting a whole lot of auditions. I think literally there was almost a year of a dry period where I just wasn’t really going in to see anything, and then one day, I got Cobra Kai."
When asked about his prior exposure to Karate before coming onboard the show, Gianni answered:

"I did Taekwondo when I was eight. I think I got up to an orange belt, but I don’t think that really counts. More recently, I’ve done Krav Maga, which, for anyone who doesn’t know, is an Israeli fighting technique they would use in the military. It’s not as flashy as karate or Taekwondo. It’s more about kicking people in the groin and gouging their eyes out."
The second part of Cobra Kai Season 6 was released on Netflix on November 15, 2024, with the final part set to release on February 13, 2025.
