The Madness, starring Colman Domingo, premiered on Netflix on November 28, 2024, and the ending wraps up the story of Domingo’s Muncie Daniels and proves his innocence.
The Madness, created by Stephen Belber, follows Muncie Daniels and how his life changes drastically after discovering the body of a white supremacist leader in the woods. It is revealed that the dead person is Mark Simon, and Munice is framed for his murder.
Throughout its eight episodes, The Madness focuses on Muncie and how he escapes from both the police and the fans of Mark Simon, the leader of The Forge, a white supremacy group.
While he navigates his personal life and tries to find the person behind framing him, the finale brings it all together when Muncie’s innocence is proved and he comes face to face with the one responsible behind his troubles.
The following article contains spoilers.
Who was Mark Simon in The Madness?
The very first episode of The Madness revealed Mark Simon as a friendly neighbor of Muncie. However, later, Muncie comes to know that he was actually a white supremacist with a huge online following of over 5 million people.
Mark was the leader of The Forge, a domestic terrorist group. However, he was not an individual who was working on his own. He was funded by Revitalize and Stu Magnusson for pushing politicians in a certain way, influencing elections, and manipulating the public for profits.
Mark was therefore a powerful tool that Revitalize used, and his online name was Brother14, under which he functioned to unite more people who believed in the works he did.
Who was behind the murder of Mark Simon in The Madness?
While Muncie was framed for the murder of Mark Simon, it was actually Don Sloss Jr. and Ant, an ex-military and a member of Profane Discord, respectively, who committed the murder.
These two were recruited by Revitalize to murder Mark. They were shown wearing ski masks at the beginning of The Madness and also tried to kill Muncie. However, Muncie stabbed one of them and got framed for the murder of Mark when he reported the whole thing to the local police.
Despite their best efforts at framing Muncie for the murder of Mark, the truth eventually came out, and these two men were ultimately exposed as the murderers.
Why was Muncie framed for the murder of Mark Simon?
While it initially seemed that Muncie was framed for Mark’s murder because of his work as a CNN contributor and activist, it ultimately turned out that he was framed simply out of convenience, as he was at the wrong place at the wrong time.
It was Julia, a fixer of Rodney Kraintz, who hired Don Sloss Jr. and Ant to kill Mark. Since Muncie reached the wrong place at the wrong time, they thought it was rather convenient to pin the murder on him.
This is made clear to Muncie during his final confrontation with Rodney Kraintz, who says that he is a "cog in the machine" and therefore expendable.
What happens to Muncie at the end of The Madness?
By the end of The Madness, Muncie successfully clears his name, and also the person behind framing him, Rodney Kraintz, is killed. However, he does not seem to be as happy as he should be, and as seen in the last episode, Muncie seems to be on edge despite things ending well for him.
Colman Domingo, the actor who plays Muncie, says,
“Because, even though Kraintz is dead, there are more Kraintzes in the world. Muncie knows it’s not over. He just uncovered a [sickness] in America. Now, Muncie understands what people will do, what this world is made of, and who’s pulling the strings. … Muncie has to become something different now.”
Since Muncie now knows that Kraintz was only one of the many billionaires doing things like these, it is only natural for him to remain anxious. Going back to the kind of normal life he was used to before the events of The Madness happened seems impossible for him, and that is how the show ends.
The Madness can be streamed on Netflix.
