The Korean cooking show on Netflix, Culinary Class Wars, has become a sensation since its release. The show is quite unique in comparison to other cooking shows in regards to its format and selection of participants.

Culinary Class Wars quite literally engages in class war as 20 elite and well-established chefs compete against 80 not-yet-established chefs. The class disparity between them is one of the most exciting aspects of the show.

The 20 elite chefs are called White Spoon chefs and they all have experience in famous restaurants and are also owners of well known places. A lot of them have previously been judges on other shows as well.

Here, we will talk about one such famous White Spoon chef, Fabrizio Ferrari. He is an Italian Michelin 1-star chef and YouTuber and is popular for creating unique fusions between Korean and Italian dishes.

Popular by the name Italy Fabri in Korea, chef Fabrizio Ferrari has broken geographical barriers by being an Italian in love with Korean food. An esteemed Michelin 1-star chef, Fabrizio Ferrari had appeared on various popular Korean cooking shows and made himself a lot of fans.

Besides being a great chef, Fabrizio Ferrari is also a professor at Sejong University, Korea, in the Department of Global Culinary Arts.

After running his family restaurant in Italy for 18 years, Ferrari came to South Korea back in 2019. He currently resides in South Korea and runs the restaurant Fabri Kitchen.

Coming from a family that’s in the restaurant business, Ferrari had grown up in an environment of cooking. Despite having a degree in Science, Ferrari realized his true passion was cooking after seeing his mother in the kitchen.

It was his techniques and ideas incorporated in the dishes of their restaurant that won them the Michelin 1-star recognition for 15 years.


How did Fabrizio Ferrari get interested in Korean cuisine?

Despite being an Italian and the owner of a Michelin star, Ferrari’s command over Korean cuisine is commendable. It all started in 2010, when he worked with Korean sous-chefs, who were working as interns in a famous Italian culinary school.

It was they who introduced Ferrari to Korean ingredients like Gochujang (Red chili paste), Ganjang (Soy sauce), and Doenjang (Soybean paste). That was the first time Ferrari got introduced to these ingredients and was highly impressed.

He also learnt to make kimchi and got an insight into the fermentation process. When the Korean chefs prepared Galbi-jjim (Braised beef short ribs) for Ferrari’s family, he was even more interested in Korean cuisine and decided to learn it better.

Before Culinary Class Wars, there were a bunch of shows that Ferrari had been a part of both as a contestant and as a judge. Back in 2016, he participated in a Korean food competition that was organized by the Korean Consulate in Milan.

He was the winner of the show and that led him to take part in the KBS contest Global Taste of Korea, where winners from other countries also participated.

In 2018, for three months, he joined Hansik Battle, a famous cooking program. There he worked alongside Lee Young-sook, a researcher who also became like a motherly figure to Ferrari.

It was also in this show that Ferrari met chef Baek Jong-won, who was a co-contestant in the show. Later, he participated in Baek Jong-won’s Mystery Kitchen as a judge.

Ferrari was also a regular member in The Genius Paik Season 2, a show that focused on establishing a restaurant business in a foreign country by offering Korean food and adapting it to the local environment of that country by using their ingredients. He had joined season 2 in the capacity of a chef to take care of the cooking side of the show.

Ferrari was also a participant in The Korean Food Battle of the world.
