Eric Dane is one of the many great castings of Grey's Anatomy. While many know him for his work on Euphoria and The Last Ship, Eric Dane is best known for playing Dr. Mark Everett Sloan on the ABC drama, Grey's Anatomy. He was part of the main cast of the series from season 3 to season 9 before his character passed away. In season 17, Eric returned as Mark shortly in a hallucination scene. Eric Dane's character, Mark Sloan is one of the most celebrated characters in television history for his character arc and humor.
Dr. Mark Sloan is a board-certified Plastic Surgeon and ENT specialist. He joined Seattle Grace Hospital as an attending in season 2, but then he was a series regular. From season 3, Mark Sloan became a series regular until his exit from the show in season 9.
Eric Dane's character, Mark Sloan on Grey's Anatomy
Eric Dane played Mark Sloan on Grey's Anatomy. Mark was an attending at Seattle Grace Hospital. He was a plastic surgeon and ENT doctor. Mark was also the best friend of Dr. Derek Shepherd, the famous neurosurgeon at Seattle Grace Hospital. They had grown up together and Mark was close to almost everyone in the Shepherd family. However, when Mark is introduced in season 2 of the show, the two best friends are not so friendly. Derek is angry at Mark for having an affair with Derek's wife, Dr. Addison Montgomery, who then, was a board-certified OB/GYN.
Mark Sloan is introduced in Grey's Anatomy as a ladies man. He is an excellent surgeon, but his character is often under scrutiny. He is known to have had relations with all nurses and many others on the staff, although none were long-lasting. His physical appearance and s*x life earned him the nickname, McSteamy.
While he starts the show with Derek angry at him, the situation eventually gets better and the two reconcile. Mark played by Eric Dane is not just a pretty face to look at. He performs several impressive plastic surgeries on the show and becomes the head of Plastic Surgery at the hospital. In later seasons, he also mentors Jackson Avery.
No one expected Mark Sloan to fall in love or have children. But he does. Mark dates and falls in love with Lexie Grey, a surgical resident at the hospital and Meredith Grey's sister. Mark soon finds out he has an eighteen-year-old daughter called Sloan. He tries to have a relationship with her, but she is shown as a complex character. Grey's Anatomy soon discontinues her storyline but her arrival causes Mark and Lexie Grey's relationship to fail.
Mark has another daughter, Sofia Robbins Sloan Torres. He had slept with Callie Torres, the orthopedic attending at the hospital and they had conceived Sofia. However Callie was still in love with her ex Arizona Robbins and when she returned, Mark, Arizona, and Callie decided to raise Sofia together.
Eric Dane played an extremely well-written character. Mark started as a ladies' man, who was an arrogant surgeon. But by the end of his life, he had fallen in love and become a father. He loved Lexie and Lexie loved him, but before they could resolve their issues, they both got into a plane crash. Meredith, Cristina, Derek, Arizona, Lexie, and Mark were in a fatal plane crash when they were flying to Boise, Idaho to perform a separation surgery of conjoined twins.
The plane crash left them all traumatized. Lexie died, Arizona lost one of her legs, Derek had a bad hand injury and Cristina suffered from PTSD. Mark Sloan suffered greatly as well, and after showing signs of recovery, passed away at the beginning of season 9 of Grey's Anatomy. Seattle Grace Hospital was renamed as Grey Sloan Memorial in honor of Lexie Grey and Mark Sloan.
Eric Dane played one of the most interesting and loved characters of Grey's Anatomy. Fans, to this day, wish Mark Sloan had not died. They miss Eric terribly. Eric Dane did return to season 17 of Grey's Anatomy when he appeared in Meredith's hallucination/dream episodes.
