Grotesquerie is Ryan Murphy’s newest concoction in the crime-horror genre, presenting, as the name suggests, grotesque fictional crimes. Despite the occasional jarring content, followed by jump scares and dark undertones, the series’ protagonist, Detective Lois Tryon, played by Emmy-winning actress Niecy Nash-Betts, is in the limelight.

In the series, Nash-Betts plays a veteran detective with a wealth of knowledge from her experience as a cop. However, no amount of experience with homicides or police work could have prepared her for the most obscene and horrendous murders unraveling in her community.

Lois has one primary vice, which has been heavily emphasized and depicted in the story: alcoholism. This is something her daughter, Merrit, has tried to assist with. Besides being a mom and raising her daughter, she is also a dedicated wife.

Her husband, Marshall Tryon, was an attorney before he was rendered to a near-vegetative state, requiring round-the-clock medical assistance. Currently, she is investigating a string of bizarre murders with a serial killer on the loose.

However, this is no ordinary murderer; he uses religious beliefs to induce fear in the community through the killings. The detective is teaming up with Sister Megan (played by Micaela Diamond), a journalist for The Catholic Guardian, to unlock the mysteries of the deaths, using her expertise when applicable.
