Former Newark, Delaware-based optometrist David Matusiewicz gained notoriety for his role in a tragic and unsettling chain of events. Matusiewicz and his ex-wife, Christine Belford, were involved in a contentious custody dispute that finally turned into a brutal murder.

David and Christine were married in 2001 and have three kids together. However, their marriage deteriorated, and Christine filed for divorce in 2006. In 2007, David and his mother, Lenore, abducted their children and fled to Central America. The children were later discovered in Nicaragua and restored to Christine's custody. David and Lenore were apprehended, and David received a jail sentence for international parental abduction.

David continued to torment Christine through his family while he was incarcerated, planning a campaign of harassment and cyberstalking. He and his family, which included his sister Amy Gonzalez and mother Lenore, made up accusations of violence against Christine. They wrote disparaging letters to Christine's friends and neighbors, as well as utilized emails and websites. For years, Christine and her kids suffered greatly as a result of this abuse.

Following his release from jail in 2013, David plotted a deadly attack on Christine. On February 11, 2013, David flew to Delaware with his father, Thomas, and mother, Lenore, claiming to be attending a child support hearing. David's father, Thomas Matusiewicz, waited for Christine outside the courthouse.

When Christine came, Thomas shot and murdered her, as well as her companion, Laura Mulford. Two Capitol Police officers were injured in a gunfight before Thomas killed himself.

After an inquiry, charges of conspiracy, stalking, and cyberstalking resulting in death were brought against David Matusiewicz, his mother, and his sister. They were all found guilty in 2016. David's involvement in the circumstances leading up to Christine's murder earned him a life sentence without the chance of release. He is presently a prisoner at Terre Haute, Indiana's United States Penitentiary.

The terrible events surrounding Christine Belford's death and David Matusiewicz's actions serve as a sobering reminder of the devastation caused by persistent harassment and the repercussions of unresolved custody disputes.
