The Wheel of Time on Amazon Prime Video brings to the screen the immensely layered and complex fantasy world of Robert Jordan's book series of the same name. It focuses on characters and events that center around The White Tower. As one of the familiar tropes from the book series, The Wheel of Time on Amazon Prime Video hints at the existence of the Darkfriends, or the minions of the shadow.

Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time books have variously described the Darkfriends as agents of evil, as those that have pledged their allegiance to the Dark One. Such characters have been drawn from all walks of life and their sole purpose is to use the resources at their disposal to strengthen the Dark One.

There were such characters as Barthanes, Liandrin, and Joiya who have already been exposed as Darkfriends. Below we try to decipher which other characters might be the agents of the Dark One on The Wheel of Time.

The Wheel of Time: Darkfriends' identities and possibilities explored

Since the Amazon Prime Video show is based on the book series by Robert Jordan, many questions concerning the show might be answered by looking into the books. For instance, The Lord of Chaos is the sixth book in the series, which describes a character named, Galina, who belongs to the Red Ajah, dedicated to implementing Alviarin's orders to capture Rand.

Similarly, the third episode of the show hinted at a member of the Red Ajah named Galina. Although it hasn't yet been explicitly established on the show that Galina is a Darkfriend, it remains a distinct possibility for the future.

Moving on, Alviarin Friedhen's character is another likely subject for a Darkfriend. The books describe her as a Black Ajah who successfully duped Elaida into believing that she was one among the Whites, thus earning to be Elaida's Keeper of the Chronicles after the latter assumed the Amyrlin seat. However, as it turned out, Alviarin was actually intent on utilizing her influence over the Amyrlin seat to eventually control the White Tower.

Showrunner opens up about their handling of queer representation

Showrunner, Rafe Judkins, recently spoke in an exclusive interview with The Hollywood Reporter on March 27 wherein he opened up on the elements of LGBTQ+ inclusion as enshrined in the source material and how this informed the making of the show:

"We made a conscious decision in the first season writers room to make sure homophobia didn’t exist in The Wheel of Time. I think a lot of our audience won’t notice it, but some of the audience does notice and feel it — that it is fantasy. We go to worlds different from our own, and people think about the world and the people in it differently than our own. We don’t need homophobia to exist. It doesn’t really in the books. Very rarely does anyone ever make any negative commentary about any queer relationship in the books.”

The Wheel of Time is exclusively available on Amazon Prime Video.
