More on The Residence's lead in our story.
Details about The Residence lead: Detective Cordelia Cupp
Detective Cordelia Cupp is consulting with the Metropolitan Police Department. She is a well-known investigator, recognized for her sharp observational skills—an asset in solving this high-stakes case.
Her expertise is evident in the case she is assigned to: uncovering the killer of the Chief Usher at a fictionalized White House during a state dinner. With 132 rooms and 157 suspects, the task at hand is daunting, but Cordelia’s keen eye is sure to crack the case.
Beyond being an exceptional detective, Cordelia is also an avid birder, a detail hinted at in The Residence's poster, where she is seen with a pair of binoculars. Birding is often associated with attention to detail and precision, making it a fitting hobby for a detective.
In an interview with Netflix's Tudum, Aduba talks about her character’s unique pastime:
“Cordelia’s passion for birding tells me about her patience. Birding takes an incredible amount of it,”
While murder mysteries are often led by male detectives, it is refreshing to see female-driven stories where women take charge in modern murder mysteries. Follow Cordelia's adventures in The Residence on Netflix, premiering March 20, 2025.
Who plays Cordelia Cupp in The Residence? Exploring the actresses' notable projects
American actress Uzo Aduba brings Cordelia Cupp’s wry and witty detective style to life in The Residence.
Aduba is best known for her role as Suzanne Warren in Netflix's Orange Is the New Black. She has also appeared in several films, including Candy Jar, Miss Virginia, Lightyear, and National Champions.
Her performance in FX's political drama Mrs. America, where she portrayed real-life American politician Shirley Chisholm, earned her three Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.
Discussing the unlikely setting of her new series, Aduba notes (via Netflix Tudum):
“It is a different take and spin on the house that we all know — it’s a peek inside a world that we don’t often get to see. The show begs the question, ‘Who runs the house?’ And the answer is not what we think it is.”
She also highlighted the legacy of strong Shondaland female protagonists and how Cordelia is now part of that club:
“They lean into their strength; they have a voice that’s entirely their own; they are unapologetically themselves, independent and committed to what they believe to be the truth. They are smart. They are lethal with their words. They’re fearless women.”
