Paramount+’s Mayor of Kingstown features an exciting mix of characters, making the crime thriller a must-watch. The show tells the story of Mike McLusky, played by Jeremy Renner, the head of the power broker family that acts as a mediator between police, criminals, and gangs.
During the show, Mike finds a close ally in Bunny, aka Deverin Washington, played by Tobi Bamtefa. Bunny is a drug dealer and violent man who always keeps his guard up and trusts nobody.
He builds a close but turbulent relationship with Mike, as the two often depend on one another for survival amid all the gang wars and betrayals. Over the years, Bunny has become one of the most fascinating personalities on Mayor of Kingstown.
Bunny is a drug lord and Mike’s ally in Mayor of Kingstown
Bunny is the leader of the Crips gang in Mayor of Kingstown, who sells drugs from his lawn. While he is a ruthless drug lord, he is also thoughtful and pragmatic. From the start, Bunny and Mike are shown to have a working relationship based on mutual respect, even if they do not fully trust each other.
When Mitch, Mike's brother, works with Bunny, they maintain the fragile peace between the gangs and law enforcement. After Mitch’s death, Mike takes over as the 'mayor' of Kingstown, and Bunny expresses sympathy for Mike for his brother’s loss.
Their friendship grows when Mike tries to apologize to Bunny after a rough encounter with the FBI by bringing him a new chair to replace the one he broke. They drink together and open up about their struggles and thoughts on life and death, which deepens their connection.
However, Bunny has a pessimistic outlook and expresses that life for someone like him is a cycle of suffering that ends only in death. Bunny tells Mike that, in the end, they are similar. Despite this connection, Bunny and Mike frequently clash over how they handle things in Kingstown.
Bunny’s gang is a powerful force in the town, and he does not hesitate to demand respect and favors from Mike. He faces extreme challenges in the second season, especially after being imprisoned in Anchor Bay, where he starts to lose his grip on his gang's power.
Bunny feels betrayed by the system and even Mike, who he initially trusted to help him. He ultimately starts to take matters into his own hands, as he no longer believes that Mike can protect him or uphold his promises.
Bunny’s growing frustration and overconfidence eventually create serious problems for him and his gang. His decision to take a stand against the Russian mob boss Konstantin Noskov backfires, proving that he might not be as powerful or influential as he thinks.
His cautious approach and fear in the earlier seasons keep him relatively safe, but his growing sense of power and desire for respect lead him to a dangerous path later.
While Bunny sees himself as a leader who can face any challenge, he realizes that some things are still out of his control when he struggles against Konstantin in Mayor of Kingstown Season 3.
Tobi Bamtefa calls Bunny and Mike’s relationship a balancing power in Mayor of Kingstown
Actor Tobi Bamtefa opened up about his character and his dynamics with Mike in an interview with UPI after the release of Mayor of Kingstown Season 3. The actor reflected on how Bunny and Mike’s relationship is important for maintaining the town's power balance. Bamtefa said:
“That balance is always under threat, so there's always tension because things don't go quite the way each character wants to handle the situation. Everybody has their different ways of handling things.”
He added:
"Bunny tends to be a bit heavy-handed with his approach to stuff and Mike tries to kind of have a little bit more finesse in that, but that takes time, and time can often cost lives, so that's kind of how they grapple with that."
