Dalgliesh is back. And if you’re just as obsessed with murder mysteries as we are, you’ll be thrilled to watch season 3.

Set in mid-1970s England, Dalgliesh is more than just a typical detective drama. It’s a poetic, stylish, and deeply layered exploration of crime. At the heart of it all is Detective Chief Inspector Adam Dalgliesh. He is played by Bertie Carvel.

This time, the show doesn’t just bring back its protagonist but also introduces some stellar guest stars, and of course, Alistair Brammer as Detective Sergeant Daniel Tarrant.

DS Daniel Tarrant is no ordinary sidekick. He is played by theatre star Alistair Brammer. Tarrant is a product of his privileged background. But he is also a promising detective with sharp instincts.

Brammer’s addition to the cast breathes new life into the team dynamic. And we can’t wait to see how his journey unfolds in this season’s episodes.

So, let’s know more about Alistair Brammer’s role in Dalgliesh.

Who does Alistair Brammer play in Dalgliesh?

Alistair Brammer portrays DS Daniel Tarrant. He is Dalgliesh’s partner. Tarrant joined the show in season 2.

He brought with him a fresh perspective to the murder-solving duo. At just 28, Tarrant’s rise through the ranks has been swift. Largely thanks to his privileged background as a Cambridge graduate.

However, as Brammer describes him, Tarrant is “a good guy with a good heart.” He has quietly honed his detective skills. Tarrant’s sharp instincts make him an asset to Dalgliesh’s team.

He may lack Miskin’s grit and experience. But his ability to read people and navigate challenging cases makes him a strong contender in the detective world.

Despite his seemingly easy start in life, Tarrant earns his place as a capable investigator. He tackles some of the most complex crimes of the 1970s. He’s got determination and respect for his team.

Brammer got deep into 1970s police culture to prepare for the role. He researched the attitudes of the era. He reflected on how people from different backgrounds would interact. He ensured that Tarrant felt authentic.

For Brammer, playing Tarrant has been a highlight of his career. He described the experience as immersive and rewarding.

If Alistair Brammer looks familiar, it’s probably because he’s a big name in the theatre world.

He’s best known for his performances in Les Misérables (both the 2012 film and the 25th-anniversary concert) and as Fiyero in the West End production of Wicked.

Brammer has also appeared in shows like Casualty, House of the Dragon, and Valhalla Project.

How does DS Tarrant fit into season 3?

Season 3 of Dalgliesh kicks off with Tarrant already at a crossroads. In episode 1, Tarrant reveals he’s been accepted into a Senior Command Program. It’s a huge opportunity for his career.

But before stepping into his new role, he teams up with Dalgliesh to investigate a chilling murder in a West Sussex seminary.

The season is split into three two-episode arcs. Each of them adapted from PD James’ novels. Here’s a sneak peek into the stories:

In Death in Holy Orders, Tarrant and Dalgliesh find out secrets surrounding the murder of a senior churchman.

In Cover Her Face, a wealthy family in Essex becomes the center of a murder investigation.

In Devices and Desires, the duo takes on a series of killings in Kent. It is suspected to involve anti-nuclear campaigners.

Alistair Brammer’s take on Daniel Tarrant

Brammer first stepped into Tarrant’s shoes and brought an insightful perspective to the character. According to Radio Times, Brammer shared:

“DS Daniel Tarrant is in his late 20s, and unlike Miskin he’s been fast tracked into becoming a detective quite quickly, purely because as a white, male Cambridge graduate he’s from a privileged background. He’s certainly a product of his time — but he’s a good guy. He’s got a good heart. He’s quietly good at his job, he’s got good instincts. I think he can read people well. He’s certainly got the makings of a good detective.”

Brammer also shares how Tarrant’s relationship with Dalgliesh grows over time:

“Dalgliesh has got this impenetrable wall, but Tarrant shows Dalgliesh respect, so Dalgliesh shows him respect in return. Dalgliesh is very good at recognizing people’s strengths on the team, so he certainly values what Tarrant brings to the table.”

Brammer talks about his dynamic with Miskin:

“They begin at loggerheads, but as they travel through, they start to recognize that, they work well as a team. And even though they often disagree, it’s only because they’re following their respective instincts. By the end of the series, I think they come to realize that they’re both as good as each other, but for different reasons — which is why they’re quite valuable to each other by the end.”

Alistair Brammer’s DS Daniel Tarrant in Dalgliesh adds a refreshing energy to the series.
