The show is a humorous retelling of a high-stakes Cold War incident. In 1981, a Soviet submarine, U-137, got stuck near Sweden’s Karlskrona archipelago, close to a secret naval base. As per the show, the crew had been drinking to celebrate a new dad, but the party turned into an international crisis that nearly caused a nuclear war.

The series mixes humor with political drama and focuses on the eccentric behavior of world politicians like Soviet leader, Leonid Brezhnev, and US President, Ronald Reagan. At the center of the conflict was Sweden’s Prime Minister, Thorbjörn Fälldin, who did not even speak English but was tasked to calm the situation.

The official synopsis for the series reads:

“In 1981, the Soviet submarine U137 ran aground in the Karlskrona archipelago; never before had the world been so close to a major global conflict; the entire responsibility fell on Swedish Prime Minister Fälldin.”
