Cobra Kai season 6 part 2 premiered on Netflix on November 15, 2024, and ended with a heartbreaking death. The show, which serves as a sequel to the Karate Kid film series, brings back several characters from the movies while also introducing new faces.
Season 6 marks the final installment of the martial arts drama and showcases the Valley’s Karate community getting into an intense competition before Sekai Taikai, the international tournament.
Cobra Kai Season 6 part 2 ends on a surprising note as Kwon Jae-Sung, played by Brandon H. Lee, dies. Kwon’s death is brutal but accidental as he impales himself after a brawl erupts at the Sekai Taikai tournament venue.
Kwon Jae-Sung dies by impaling himself in Cobra Kai Season 6 part 2
Kwon is introduced in Cobra Kai Season 6 episode 3, as a talented but rebellious student in Kim Da-Eun's South Korean Cobra Kai dojo. He stands out for his incredible skills, including high kicks, but struggles to follow the rules.
John Kreese sees potential in Kwon’s anger and tries to channel it, teaching him to be heartless if he wants to win. Kwon eventually dominates his dojo rival, Yoon Do-Jin, and becomes a leader among the students. However, his aggression and rebellious nature lead to his downfall.
Kwon has a huge role to play at the Sekai Taikai tournament in Barcelona, where Cobra Kai competes against other top international dojos, including Miyagi-Do. The competition gets fierce and tensions run high among the teams and their senseis.
Meanwhile, Kwon’s rivalry with Axel Kovacevic, a fighter from the Iron Dragons dojo, becomes one of the tournament's highlights. Being taller and more skilled, Axel defeats Kwon consistently, which frustrates him.
When a chaotic brawl gets triggered at the tournament venue after the disqualification of a Russian team, Kwon and Axel get into a physical fight with each other.
Fuming with anger, Kwon picks up a knife dropped by Axel and charges at his opponent. However, Axel defends himself and counters Kwon’s attack. In the struggle, Kwon accidentally falls onto the knife and impales himself.
The entire arena, filled with fighters and spectators, falls silent in shock. At the same time, the live feed is immediately cut, leaving the audience stunned. Kwon’s death signifies Kreese’s influence and Cobra Kai’s aggressive teachings.
Kwon’s anger is similar to that of Kreese, which shows how toxic mentorship can lead to dangerous outcomes. If Kwon had been guided by someone like Daniel LaRusso, he might have become a disciplined and focused fighter instead of being blinded by his emotions.
Kwon’s death will significantly impact Cobra Kai Season 6 part 3
The aftermath of the gruesome death will be seen in the final episodes of Cobra Kai. Series co-creator Josh Heald had an interview with TVLine, where he explained how Kwon’s demise will have a ripple effect in the Sekai Taikai tournament. He said:
“His death is a big moment and it should reverberate across the karate community. This was a televised event that went out across the world. The Sekai Taikai has finally come out of the shadows and is being broadcast as a major sporting event and this happens.
Heald added that the incident puts the safety practices of the competition in question, and many characters will take the blame for Kwon's death:
“It’s terrible and there’s a lot of people who are going to very likely place blame on themselves. It throws the whole idea of competitive karate and the safety of that into question, and whether or not anyone’s intentions, good, bad or otherwise, are to blame for what’s happened.”
“It will have as much impact as any possible cliffhanger ever has on this show and it will deeply inform the endgame of the series.”
Cobra Kai Season 6 part 3, which includes the final five episodes of the series, will premiere on Netflix on February 13, 2025.
