Which Lantern Corps might be a part of James Gunn's Lanterns and what emotions fuel them: Speculations explored

The Green Lanterns are one of DC's most complicated and yet fan-favorite characters out there. While the animated interpretations of these characters are beloved, 2011's Green Lantern gave these characters a negative reputation that they have been trying to escape ever since. Cut to January 31, 2023: DC Studios Co-CEO James Gunn announced a Green Lantern series featuring two heroes.

HBO's Lanterns would feature not only Hal Jordan but also John Stewart, played by actors Aaron Pierre (as Stewart) and Kyle Chandler (as Jordan). Gunn, in the January 2023 presentation, mentioned True Detective as one of the influences for the series. It revolves around a murder in a small town, and as our heroes investigate the murder, they uncover a dark conspiracy.

But fans are excited to see which Lantern Corps will be a part of the series. As of now, the only one confirmed to appear is the Green Lantern Corps.

Speculations for the Lantern Corps appearing in HBO's Lanterns

As of now, the Lanterns team has confirmed three characters associated with the Green Lantern Corps. Hal Jordan, John Stewart, and Thaal Sinestro (played by Danish actor Ulrich Thomsen). If you know the DC lore or have seen the 2011 movie, Sinestro is one of the Green Lanterns who trained Hal Jordan. But there's more to Sinestro's story than the movie didn't show.

Apart from the Green Lantern Corps, there are several other lantern corps representing different colors in the DC lore that stand for different emotions. For instance, the red rings of the Red Lantern Corps represent rage, and the Black Lantern Corps represent death, i.e., zombies.

But for now, fans are expecting that the series will feature two Green Lantern Corps members and one Yellow Lantern Corps member. Here's looking at the two Lantern Corps and what the colors mean:

• Green Lanterns

The Green Lantern Corps is supposedly the strongest group of the Lantern Corps, as the color green symbolizes will and determination. Will, represented by green, is considered the most powerful emotion that can beat rage, fear, and other emotions that are a part of the Lantern spectrum. Green Lantern Corps members like Hal, John, Kilowog, Tomar-Re, and Kyle, Guy supposedly have strong willpower.

Members of the Green Lantern Corps take and uphold this oath:

"In brightest day, in blackest night, no evil shall escape my sight! Let those who worship evil's might, beware my power, Green Lantern's light!"

• Yellow Lanterns:

Established by the former Green Lantern Corps member Sinestro, the Yellow Lanterns, or Sinestro Corps, are the arch nemesis of the Green Lantern Corps. This Lantern Corps is known for instilling fear across the galaxy. Sinestro explicitly created the Yellow Lantern Corp to impose his twisted vision of order on the universe. For this purpose, he is ready to wipe out his former Lantern Corps members.

The oath for the Yellow Lantern Corp reads:

"In blackest day, in brightest night, Beware your fears made into light. Let those who try to stop what's right, Burn like my power… Sinestro's might!"

James Gunn had described the show as grounded and realistic. This means that this season may not feature other Lantern Corps. However, fans are hoping for hints at other Lantern Corps like:

1. Orange Lantern Corps representing avarice, meaning greed
2. Blue Lantern Corps representing hope
3. Indigo Tribe representing compassion
4. Star Sapphire Corps representing love
5. White Lantern Corps representing life
6. Ultraviolet Lantern Corps representing hidden negative feelings
