Netflix is going to scale down its interactive titles greatly. As of December 1, 2024, four interactive titles will be left of the 24 titles; namely, Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. the Reverend, Ranveer vs. Wild with Bear Grylls, and You vs. Wild.
As first reported by The Verge, the end for these unique interactive experiences that launched in 2017 but struggled to sustain their audience may now be near.
Although its library of interactive content spans from rom-coms to WWE specials, interactive titles' limited offerings and lack of continued development may have thus limited the interest in such programs.
“The technology served its purpose, but is now limiting as we focus on technological efforts in other areas,” Netflix spokesperson Chrissy Kelleher told The Verge.
Soon, titles such as Choose Love, Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous: Hidden Adventure, and Carmen Sandiego: To Steal or Not to Steal will vanish.
Details on the four remaining interactive titles on Netflix
1) Black Mirror: Bandersnatch
Black Mirror: Bandersnatch is an innovative interactive film from 2018 set in 1984. The story revolves around the young programmer Stefan Butler, who is hired to translate a choose-your-own-adventure book into a video game. The choices viewers make for Stefan guide him through free will, control, and mental breakdown in the film.
The movie has endings and pathways in itself, hence its viewing experience is unique, running anywhere from 90 minutes to over two hours. Its narrative has gotten praise for its depth and engagement, which makes it a standout example of interactive storytelling in cinema.
2) Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. the Reverend
The interactive special Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. the Reverend is taken from the popular Netflix show. It was released in 2020, featuring Kimmy trying to communicate with her former captor, the Reverend, whose moves viewers control, resulting in various slapstick comedy endings.
The special maintains the humor of the show but allows the fans to be part of the story directly. This format has enhanced the viewing experience since several paths and endings can encourage the viewer to revisit the special by checking different scenarios and endings.
3) Ranveer vs. Wild with Bear Grylls
Ranveer vs. Wild with Bear Grylls started in 2022, starring Indian actor Ranveer Singh along with survival expert Bear Grylls. The show invites viewers to help Ranveer face challenges in a wilderness setting.
Audiences can choose on Ranveer's behalf which dictates how he encounters animals and treacherous ground. This approach combines the thrill of survival with the psychology of choices regarding tussles with wild animals and challenging ground, meaning audiences can relate to his adventure and nature aspects.
4) You vs. Wild
You vs. Wild is an interactive series that puts the viewer in charge of making survival decisions for Bear Grylls in extreme environments. Launched in 2019, the show is a strong participant-driven program, with viewers choosing Bear's actions as he faces varying challenges in nature.
With every decision, the situation will vary, and with survival skills and strategies displayed while maintaining an entertaining plot, it is both a thriller to watch and educate viewers about wilderness survival.
