MCU's first animated series, What If...?, premiered its highly-anticipated Season 3, episode 6, on December 27.

The show is an anthology of stories set in an alternate reality, bringing back iconic MCU characters in a setting that is often completely different from the original timeline.

The show's concept allows the makers to bring many minor characters back and explore new possibilities with them. To make the most of it, What If...? Season 3 Episode 6 brought back actor Walter Goggins, who made his MCU debut as Sonny Burch in Ant-Man and the Wasp.

While MCU is known for its casting, with perfect actors selected to play heroes and villains across the Multiverse, Goggins' Sonny was a rather forgettable character who was not seen in any other MCU projects until What If...? Season 3.

Goggins is an acclaimed Hollywood actor with a career spanning decades, having featured in projects like Fallout, Django Unchained, and The Hateful Eight. However, Sonny Burch was not an apt character for an actor of his caliber, and he is finally redeemed with the MCU's latest project.

More on Walter Goggins' character in What If...? Season 3 in our story.

Walter Goggins' Sonny Burch returns in What If...?Season 3

Fans might not remember Goggins's Sonny Burch from his MCU debut, but he was redeemed as a supporting antagonist in What If...? Episode 6 of Season 3.

The episode features Shang-Chi and Kate Bishop/Hawkeye in the titular role, who pair together to take down the Hood in a story set in the Wild West. Sonny Burch acts as the secondary antagonist and Hood's partner, who is in possession of a mysterious device that hypnotizes victims.

Unlike his Marvel debut movie, What If...? 's Sonny is far more menacing and a better fit as an antagonist, a role that also fits Goggins as an actor. Although Ant-Man's Sonny was unmemorable and lacked character development, the animated series saved his character, as in one of the scenes he was on the verge of outwitting Bishop.

In one of the scenes, he gets the best of Kate when, thankfully, she is revived out of her hypnosis by the toll of a bell. Since Sonny is sent to prison at the end of his debut MCU movie, Goggins' return is possible in future MCU projects (even in live-action).

Who was What If...? Season 3's Sonny Burch in Ant-Man and the Wasp?

Sonny Burch was introduced in Ant-Man and the Wasp as an unscrupulous businessman who wants to steal Hank's mobile laboratory. But before he can further the damage and execute his evil plans, he is caught by the Giant-Man and put behind bars.

While Sonny was an antagonist in the movie, his character was minor in capacity, and it felt that he was introduced as a catalyst for the introduction of Giant-Man. He failed to capture the audience's attention like a typical MCU villain who gives their heroic counterpart a run for their money.

This was why, after being sent to prison in Ant-Man and the Wasp, his character was not revived in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania or any other MCU project until he finally redeemed himself in an alternate reality in What If...? Season 3.
