If the Paramount sitcoms have to be listed, then The Big Bang Theory, perceived as one of the most cherished shows, stands right up there. The series created by Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady depicts the lives of a handful of socially awkward scientists and their colorful interactions with the world. The official summary of The Big Bang Theory is :

Aspiring film actress Penny moves into a Pasadena apartment across the hall from brilliant, but socially awkward, physicists Sheldon Cooper and Leonard Hofstadter and shows them how little they know about life outside of the lab.

Out of all these rich and lovely characters, one fan-favorite got some tiring hard work and adjustments. But which was that character? And why did it take a long time to make it perfect? Let's find out.

Sheldon Cooper: A Complex Character to Perfect

As stated by their creators, Jim Parsons, the character that proved the most challenging to perfect was Sheldon Cooper. Although he came to be one of the most memorable and recognizable figures in situational comedy, his very individualistic approach required refinement in the early stages of development. Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady envisaged Sheldon as a bright theoretical physicist and socially incapable.

His mannerisms, obsessive habits, and very strict following of routines in The Big Bang Theory were all carefully choreographed. The challenge becomes how to make that humorous without making him an engrossing character in the eyes of the audience, as Lorre pointed out: that, getting the right Sheldon's towering intellectual and yet making him unlikely, she could do thoughtful tweaks of the script and that Parsons would have to execute that with finer nuances.

The actor's performance is stellar, only paralleled by the remarkable, unique result of Parsons'. The endearing awkwardness comes off as charming and gives the character its very fortunate success.

Changes and Adjustments During Development

The character, Sheldon, from the initial pilot episode of The Big Bang Theory was very different from the character whom the fans eventually came to love. The original theme envisioned him to be more disconnected and emotionally vacant. But this version of him failed to work with the testers being shown. Lorre and Prady adjusted them.

In his new coat of paint, Sheldon remained intelligent, but with a sense of humor, vulnerability, and curiosity. His catchphrase, "Bazinga!" as well as interactions with Leonard,1 Penny, and the whole gang, evolved gradually. The creators also have emphasized Sheldon’s innocence and true curiosity about the world, making him more identifiable and endearing.

The actor dedicated himself to understanding Sheldon’s mannerisms and sharpening the impeccable comedic timing that would make or break this role. Over twelve seasons, Sheldon grew to relate to others emotionally, form friendships, and even find love with Amy Farrah Fowler, who was played by Mayim Bialik.

Creating Sheldon Cooper was neither easy nor a task accomplished in a day. The numerous tweaks from the creators, combined with an incredibly brilliant performance by Jim Parsons, made Sheldon not only one of the most lovable animal characters but also one in a long line of pop culture icons. The mix of humor, genius, and the evolving emotional side of the character in The Big Bang Theory speaks volumes about the concerted effort that went into it as well.

It took a while for Sheldon Cooper to perfect, but this collective talent and hard work in the backroom made him one of the best, most memorable sitcom characters ever. That's something every fan of The Big Bang Theory always cherishes.
