Yellowstone Season 5 Episode 1 was an episode dedicated to celebrating the victory of John Dutton (Kevin Costner) as the Governor of Montana. While he was not really happy about his position as a government official as he wanted to take care of his family ranch, that did not stop anyone from celebrating. John also went along with them quite reluctantly.

This event of splendor included the Governor's Ball, where various songs were performed. The band that performed three songs in Yellowstone Season 5 Episode 1 is Shane Smith & The Saints, an American red dirt country band hailing from Texas whose song had previously been featured in Yellowstone Season 4.

Let us now explore all the details about Shane Smith & The Saints, including their discography and how they landed Yellowstone.

Shane Smith & The Saints’ Discography

As is quite clear from their name, the band consists of Shane Smith as the songwriter, Bennett Brown as the fiddle player, Zach Stover as the drummer, Dustin Schaefer as the guitarist, and Chase Satterwhite as the bassist.

Their album, Coast, came out in 2013 under Geronimo West Records’ label. Their second studio album, Geronimo, was released in 2015. Their other two releases include Hail Mary and Norther, which were released in 2019 and 2024, respectively. The band also released a live album in 2021 titled Live from the Desert.

How did Shane Smith & The Saints land a spot in Yellowstone?

Yellowstone Season 5 Episode 1 was not the first time that Shane Smith & The Saints was featured on the show. In season 4, towards the end of episode 4, Travis Wheatley (Taylor Sheridan) mentions the band, saying he’s listening to them while driving his truck. This acknowledgment makes it clear that the episode’s title, "All I See Is You," was named after Shane Smith & The Saints’ song Travis was listening to.

Seeing them being featured on the show, Smith tried to get in touch with Sheridan to perform a free show for him. However, while that did not work out at that moment, Smith’s band was later contacted by Andrea von Foerster, the music supervisor of Yellowstone, regarding the spot they landed in Season 5 Episode 1.

After managing to make a 48-hour gap between their tours, Shane Smith & The Saints reached Montana to record the three songs featured in Yellowstone Season 5 Episode 1. These songs were Alex, Fire In The Ocean, and Dance The Night Away.

Their appearance on the show positively boosted the band’s reputation. It brought them a lot of new opportunities and gigs, including the chance to attend the premiere of another Yellowstone spin-off, 1923.

In an interview with Holler, Smith talked about his experience working with Sheridan and said that most of Yellowstone's music comes from independent musicians. He further added,

“I just think it's incredible that he's essentially like, ‘I don't care. If you're trying to pay me to put this song on instead of this song, I don't need your money. This is what I think is good’. It has changed multiple musicians’ careers.”

Smith also mentioned that the band, when contacted by the Yellowstone team, was going through rough patches and needed the boost. Smith told Holler,

‘All I See Is You’ was one of those songs while he was writing Yellowstone. He was a fan and he just wanted to showcase it. We're very appreciative of that, and we couldn't be more thankful of the timing. We really needed some help in that moment, and little did Taylor know, we had just gone through a really difficult time. It was incredible the way it rolled out, and we saw a massive impact from it”.

The band has been doing really well post their appearance on Yellowstone and the band members have been dealing with these overwhelming responses in the best way they can.

Yellowstone can be streamed on Netflix.
