The film draws it's name from the swampy marshlands of the same name that borders Texas and Louisiana. The vast expanse of wetlands riddled with fog lends an eerie air of mystery to the actual location which inspired filmmakers Celine Held and Logan George so much so that they decided to name the film after the location itself.

The title of the film was originally supposed to be The Vanishing at Caddo Lake, however it was subsequently shortened to just Caddo Lake as it was thought that the earlier title gave much of the mystery of the plot away. The film has a PG 13 rating and clocks in at ninety nine minutes in duration. It is distributed by New Line Cinema along with Max Original.

The director duo has emphasized the importance of the location of the lake in setting up the mood and tonality of the film. According to ScreenRant, Held and George revealed details about the genesis of the film. Held stated:

"We can say, the initial kind of inspiration was, we found a photo of Caddo Lake on Reddit. Love Reddit. May 2020, found a photo of Caddo Lake on Reddit, and we were immediately taken by this photo. The lake splits state lines, and the Louisiana side, it just looks like a lake. I was so confused. I was like, this is not what I expected. But the Texas side is full of these mazes and little pathways and pieces that feel like they're constantly switching and moving."

George further added:

"We're very location-based storytellers. The location really drives the narrative work of how we piece the story together. And so finding this location and how inherently cinematic it was, right off the bat, was really exciting to us. We lived off the lake for about two months writing the first draft of the story."

The film focuses on a reclusive protagonist Paris (Dylan O'Brien), who has isolated himself from society in the wake of his mother's death in a car accident and lives in the vicinity of the lake.

On the other hand, Ellie (Eliza Scanlen) is a spirited young girl who wants to discover her past. Their roads eventually intertwine and set things in motion for the rest of the film.
