Filming of Wednesday
Ortega described her work on the series as "the most overwhelming job I've ever had" and "very stressful and confusing" because of the production's rapid filming schedule. Ortega took classes in German, archery, canoeing, and fencing in addition to learning to play the cello to prepare for her role.
Actress Joy Sunday claims that the canoeing sessions were particularly exhausting, with the whole cast and over a dozen stuntmen competing against one another for an hour every day, with some days beginning as early as 5:30 am. To play the part in her way, Ortega avoided discussing the role with Ricci while filming.
Her choreography of the Cramps' "Goo Goo Muck" was inspired by Bob Fosse, Siouxsie Sioux, and videos from 1980s goth dance clubs. Ortega tried to give Wednesday's characterization more depth and consistency, even going so far as to change lines that she thought weren't appropriate for the role. She noted, "you can't lead a story and have no emotional arc because then it's boring and nobody likes you."
A combination of practical and special effects was used to create scenes with Thing, who was played by Romanian magician Victor Dorobantu. Dorobantu wore a blue chroma-key bodysuit that would be removed in post-production, exposing only his hand. Dorobantu's hand was fitted with a prosthetic stump which gave the appearance of a severed hand.
