Max's newest medical drama, The Pitt, which was released on January 9, 2025, might be reminiscent of classic medical dramas like ER and Grey's Anatomy, but the show brings its own twist to the formula of medical shows.
As mentioned in its synopsis:
"Each episode of the season covers one hour of a single 15-hour emergency department shift at the fictional Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Hospital."
Starring ER veteran star, Noah Wyle as Dr. Michael 'Robby' Rabinavitch, the show is located in a fictional hospital in Pittsburgh. While the hospital set was built entirely on a soundstage in California, the crew shot in various parts of Pittsburgh to give a more authentic feel to the medical drama.
Various exterior shots in and around Pittsburgh were included between the episodes to make it look like the cast was in Pittsburgh when they were shooting on a soundstage in California.
Here are some filming locations for The Pitt.
Where is The Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Hospital in The Pitt located?
The tense environment at the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Hospital in The Pitt might be real in the show's universe, but the hospital is not. The hospital shown in the medical drama is a large set created on a soundstage in Burbank, California.
Created by production designer, Nina Ruscio, and set decorator, Matt Callahan, the hospital is created on a 30,000-square-foot soundstage and is inspired by the Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh.
In an exclusive set interview with TribLive, Ruscio talked about the set created for the show:
''I thought that if you could create a memorable-looking space by using just a few of those architectural elements, both in the waiting room and in little suggestive spaces that are peppered throughout the main ER, we could anchor the show in a level of realism that had historical accuracy.”
Ruscio took inspiration from AGH's lobbies to create sets for the show's waiting room and ER.
Exploring the exterior locations of The Pitt
Some of the exterior locations seen in The Pitt were shot in Pittsburgh, which are as follows:
1) Cedar Ave. & Suismon St.
Southwest of the Allegheny Hospital, this street is the opening shot in Episode 1, where we see Robby walking down to start the first hour of his 15-hour shift at the hospital. The shot introduces the character and the city in which the show is set.
2) Allegheny General Hospital
Since the hospital had a huge influence over the show's set design, it was only fair that the crew used some exterior shots from the hospital. The scene where Robby talks with Jack Abbott in Episode 1 was shot at the hospital's roof.
In an interview with TribLive, Wyle talked about the scene and the location:
“That was one of the most magical views I’ve ever seen, let alone got to film on. The people were terrific, and the crew was top-notch. And we, as a cast, got to really bond.”
Another scene where the hospital's entrance is used is when Robby runs out in Episode 1. AGH's entrance was used in that scene, to make it look like Robby is coming out of a hospital.
