The much-anticipated second season of the drama, The Last of Us, was released on 13th April 2024 on HBO. The Last of Us is adapted from the game of the same name and stars Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey in lead roles. Set in a post-apocalyptic United States, it follows Joel, a smuggler who has to safely transport a teenage girl who might be the only cure for a fungal pandemic.
The show requires extremely specific locations for filming, as it is set in a world ravaged by zombies. Civilization has crumbled, trees and plants have overgrown, and nothing looks like it used to. The first season, which was heavily set in areas destroyed by the pandemic, was filmed in Canada.
However, the second season of The Last of Us is set mostly in the Jackson Community, Wyoming. But like the first season, the second season was also filmed in various parts of Canada.
Filming locations of The Last of Us Season 2
The Last of Us Season 2 takes us to Jackson, Wyoming. It has been five years since the events of season one, and Joel and Ellie are living in the Jackson community, led by Joel's brother Tommy and his wife Maria. Filming for Season 2 started in February 2024 and concluded in August 2024. The second season was filmed in Canada, like the first.
Jackson, geographically and visually, is quite different from the rest of the country in The Last of Us. It is a working society with electricity, a school, a movie theater, and a saloon. It is a fortified community, safe from any zombie attacks, and is a refuge for anyone looking for a safe place in trying times.
In the first season, Calgary, Alberta, was chosen as the filming location for Jackson. However, for Season 2, different parts of British Columbia, like Britannia Beach, Mission, Fort Langley, and Langley, were chosen to shoot the scenes set in Jackson. Calgary was not completely discarded from the list of filming locations; some parts of the show were filmed there as well.
Scenes featuring snow were filmed in the hamlet of Exshaw in the province of Alberta, mostly along Highway 1A. Besides, some scenes were also filmed in New Westminster in British Columbia.
To show a Seattle that is in the middle of a war, the creators shot the scenes in parts of British Columbia different than the ones used for Jackson. They picked Vancouver and Nanaimo to represent season 2's Seattle.
What is The Last of Us about?
The Last of Us is set twenty years into a fungal pandemic in the United States of America. Joel, the protagonist, is a smuggler who has to make sure Ellie, a teenage girl immune to the virus, is safely taken to the Fireflies. The Fireflies intended to use Ellie's cells that were immune to the virus, multiply them, and give them to everyone as a sort of vaccine or cure.
The first season of The Last of Us shows us Joel and Ellie facing various obstacles on their way and eventually revealing the reality of the Fireflies' plan. The second season follows their lives five years after the last events of Season one, as they live in Jackson. However, life won't be so peaceful forever, and more challenges are waiting for Joel and Ellie.
