Chicago P.D. has introduced a new intriguing character, Deputy Chief Charlie Reid (Shawn Hatosy), in season 12. Though his character is very different from Voight (Jason Beghe), the dynamic between them is not of complete enmity.
Reid appears to be a complicated character, and his intentions become increasingly unclear with each passing episode. Talking about the character, Showrunner Gwen Sigan told NBC Insider:
"He’s a character that certainly doesn’t lead with the honesty, you know? He doesn’t lead with the truth right away and so the fun thing about him is that it’s going to be a slow build of finding out what his real motivations are, and for Voight, having this relationship with somebody who is a bit of a chameleon, is very hard to get to know.”
This certainly makes the character very interesting, and it is no wonder that fans have been wondering what his true motives are, especially when in the fall finale, Reid expressed his desire to be friends with Hank Voight.
Since the winter premiere promo has confirmed that Reid will be playing a major part in the remaining episodes of Chicago P.D. Season 12, let us now explore in depth the actor who plays Reid and why he seems to look so familiar to the fans.
Shawn Hatosy of Chicago P.D. seems familiar because of his Law & Order Debut in 1996
The primary reason behind Hatosy seeming so familiar is that he was previously seen in the One Chicago television universe as he was also part of multiple Dick Wolf productions dating back to the 1990s.
In 1996, Hatosy’s Law & Order debut came with the episode "Savior." One of his first TV roles, this one proved to be quite good for him as he was then hired by the Dick Wolf production for Law & Order: Criminal Intent in the year 2009.
He also starred in one episode of Law & Order: LA, which ran for only one season. Hatosy appeared in the episode titled "Hayden Tract." Given the fact that the One Chicago franchise had come into being by this time and existed in the same timeline as Law & Order, Hatosy then went ahead with Chicago P.D.
His securing a role in Chicago P.D. made him one of those actors who have appeared both in Chicago P.D. and Law & Order. He also has the credit of appearing in all the spinoffs of Law & Order, even if for once, which is a great feat in itself.
Shawn Hatosy plays Deputy Chief Charlie Reid in Chicago P.D. Season 12
Given the kind of roles that Hatosy has done in the past, it is only natural that his introduction in Chicago P.D. Season 12 has got the fans hooked. Reid has been introduced as a character with negative shades since he uses some sensitive information against Voight.
However, he shows conflicting behavior on the show, and that prevents him from being perceived as a complete villain. It now remains to be seen if he is indeed the new guardian of the Intelligence or he only has evil intentions.
Regarding how the character should be perceived, Sigan mentioned:
"It's a fun sort of villain to play where, is he a villain? Is he not a villain? There’s a bit of, 'How does Voight respond to this guy and what does he really think of him?' that becomes really interesting,"
Since Sigan did not shed any clear light on the intentions of Hatosy’s Reid, only the upcoming episodes will be able to answer the questions about his true motive.
Chicago P.D. can be streamed on NBC.
