Territory is a neo-Western series set in the Australian wilderness. The Netflix show tells the story of the Lawson family, the owners of the world’s largest cattle station, the Marianne Station.

As the family members get embroiled in a struggle for ownership succession, they have to protect the land from outsiders, including gangsters, mine owners, the indigenous population, and rival farmers.

The show offers some breathtaking views that draw the audience into the Australian outback. Being a Western drama, the story is greatly complimented by its filming locations. This makes one wonder where was Netflix's Territory filmed.

The series was entirely shot in Australia, with the production team utilizing several spots in the outback to bring the narrative to life. Let’s dive into all the locations where the six-part series has been filmed.

List of all filming locations of Territory

1) Tipperary Station, Northern Territory

The place shown to be Marianne Station in the show is Tipperary Station, located in the Northern Territory of Australia. The cattle ranch serves as the central setting for the series. Originally founded in 1914, Tipperary has grown into a massive 954,000-acre ranch with 72 paddocks, each around 30 kilometers wide.

As one of the world’s largest cattle stations, its huge landscapes and cattle yards made it perfect for filming scenes that show daily ranch life. Over 200 cast and crew members stayed on-site during filming, with 140 living in a ‘camping village’ of 100 vans, which helped handle the challenges of filming in a remote area.

The real station workers were also employed as extras during the shoot, with some getting dialogs as well. The station is famous for its permanent steel yards, portable yards, and various water sources such as springs, creeks, and swamps. The station has changed ownership several times over the years, a theme also explored at the Marianne Station in Territory.

2) Kakadu National Park, Northern Territory

Kakadu National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is featured significantly in the series to showcase wilderness. This park, located in the Northern Territory’s ‘Top End,’ particularly appears in the first and last episodes of the show.

With its vast landscape including mudflats, forests, coastline, and ancient archaeological sites, Kakadu served as an ideal setting for the Western series. The show’s production team got special permission from Kakadu’s Traditional Owners to film in these important cultural areas.

This park is situated 171 kilometers southeast of Darwin and covers an impressive 19,804 square kilometers, making it the second-largest national park in Australia, after Munga-Thirri–Simpson Desert National Park.

Most of Kakadu is owned by Aboriginal traditional owners, who have lived on the land for about 60,000 years. They now work with Parks Australia to manage it. Kakadu is also famous for its Aboriginal rock art, especially at important sites like Ubirr.

3) Mallala, Adelaide Plains

Mallala, a small farming community with peaceful countryside views, served as the background for scenes that show the daily challenges of the Lawson family and their neighbors. The town and its nearby Adelaide Plains brought a rural and authentic feel to the show.

Different places around Mallala and the plains were used to represent important spots in the story, including Nolan Brannock’s Laggan Station, the Young Turks’ camp, and Hank Hodge’s Bethel Creek property.

4) Adelaide Studios, South Australia

Some indoor sequences from the show were filmed at Adelaide Studios, located in Glenside, South Australia. The production team utilized the sets inside the studios to shoot sequences that required an intimate and controlled setting.

Apart from filming, the studio was also used for post-production of the series. Adelaide Studios was opened in 2011 and is managed by the South Australian Film Corporation (SAFC).

The facility has two sound stages, a mixing theater, a Foley stage, edit rooms, production offices, and a 100-seat screening theater to aid the production of various projects.

5) Litchfield National Park, Northern Territory

Another scenic location that is seen in the show is the Litchfield National Park. The shots where Lachie and Susie fall for each other were filmed at Wangi Falls, a segmented waterfall within the park.

The spectacular view of the Falls made it the right place to shoot the romantic scene. Wangi Falls descends from 84 meters and features segmented tiers ranging from 41 to 52 meters. It has a popular swimming pool at the base.

6) Balhannah, Adelaide Hills

The town of Balhannah near Adelaide also served as a filming location for scenes showcasing Sandra Kirby’s house. This depicts the contrast between Sandra’s city life and the tough life at the ranch.

Established in 1839 as a farming community by James Turnbull Thomson, Balhannah served as a junction for the railway between Adelaide and Melbourne.

Apart from Sandra, Uncle Bryce’s house also features prominently in the series. The scenes for it were shot in Taperoo, a suburb on the Lefevre Peninsula in South Australia. Being a residential suburb, Taperoo was an excellent choice to portray Bryce’s residence as well as Community scenes.

Located about 18 kilometers northwest of Adelaide, the town gets its name from the Aboriginal word ‘Taperoo’ which means calm. The place is famous for its historic Fort Largs and its coastal views.

8) Lee Point, Darwin

Apart from the above locations, the production team shot across various other spots in the Outback, South Australia, to portray wilderness in the show. The remote area is known for its low population density and rich natural environment.

It extends from the northern to southern coastlines, featuring various climates, including tropical, arid, and semi-arid zones. The region is celebrated for its natural beauty and cultural significance. The team spent a few weeks in the harsh climate of the Outback to capture the best possible visuals of the ranch.

All six episodes of Territory are streaming on Netflix.
