Created for FOX, 9-1-1: Lone Star is an American series belonging to the procedural drama genre. It is a spin-off series inspired by 9-1-1. The series has five seasons and is scheduled to conclude with its fifth season.

The show's plot revolves around the daily lives of first responders from Austin, Texas. 9-1-1: Lone Star is about a seasoned firefighter, Owen Strand. Originally from New York, he is asked to relocate to Austin, Texas, with his son to build a team. As the show progresses, Owen is joined by fellow firefighters, members of the emergency medical services, and police officials.

9-1-1: Lone Star stars Rob Lowe as Owen Strand. The cast also features Liv Tyler, Ronen Rubinstein, Sierra McClain, Jim Parrack, Natacha Karam, Brian Michael Smith, Rafael L. Silva, Julian Works, and Gina Torres. Series regular Sierra McClain's departure was confirmed earlier this summer, and her on-screen husband affirms that she joined Mercy Ships and decided to support the organization's cause.

While the storyline explains her departure from the show, the production team divulged why they killed her role. Let's take a deep dive into her departure from the series.

Before the fifth and final season of 9-1-1: Lone Star was released, it was announced that Sierra McClain would be departing the show. The fifth season premiere revealed that Sierra McClain's character, Grace Ryder, leaves her family and Texas to become a volunteer for Mercy Ships.

Mercy Ships, in Reel and in real life, is a Christian charity organization that operates non-government hospital ships internationally. It is known for making life-saving surgeries and care available to needy people.

Since Sierra McClain fails to appear in the fifth season, her husband, Judd, is forced to explain Grace's whereabouts. Judd explains that Grace found out about Mercy Ships at her church. Moved and inspired by their work, she joins forces with them and helps their cause.

Showrunner Rashad Raisani stated that he supports how Sierra McClain's character Grace Ryder was written off the show. Rasisani further adds that killing Grace off the show would not have been the right thing to do. In a conversation with Jim Parrack, Rashad Raisani stated,

"The only thing we could think of to justifiably pull Grace away from her family and job was an even greater calling. And the only thing in Grace's world that could answer that was God."

Sierra McClain has yet to reveal why she suddenly departed from the show. However, reports have stated that contract negotiations and pay concerns could have been the reason behind the actress's decision.

9-1-1: Lone Star was reportedly canceled due to the show's demand for an expensive budget. The costly budget included the cast's salaries, so reports believe that pay negotiations could have led to Grace's departure.
