Gilmore Girls has cemented its place as one of the most beloved shows in television history. Popular as a comfort show for many people worldwide during the autumn season, Gilmore Girls has had fans hooked on the show for ages, and one of the most recurring questions that pops up about the show is - where was Gilmore Girls shot? Was it on a set, or was the quaint town of Stars Hollow a real place that one can visit?
While Stars Hollow was actually a set in Warner Bros. Studios, and not a real town, it was inspired by a real town. However, there are a few episodes and scenes that have been shot in real places as well.
Gilmore Girls was mostly shot on a set in Warner Bros. Studios
While many fans hoped that the town of Stars Hollow would be a real place, it is actually a backlot in Warner Bros. Studios, called "Midwest Street" - a set that has been used for more than 400 shows so far. These shows include several iconic ones like Pretty Little Liars, and also some classic movies like Bonnie and Clyde and Rebel Without a Cause.
The popular set is also touted as "Anytown, USA," owing to its standard setting of a small town square, gazebo, courthouse, and other standard features of any small town in the USA. This makes it easy to use as a set for multiple shows and movies. The Stars Hollow set was inspired by a rural town in Washington, Connecticut, where the show's creator, Amy Sherman-Palladino, vacationed at the five-star Mayflower Grace Inn.
While Stars Hollow is, unfortunately, not a real place that one can visit, they can still get a feel of being in the setting of Gilmore Girls if they visit the backlot of "Midwest Street" in Warner Bros. Studios. This is because the gazebo of Stars Hollow is still present in the backlot, although several iconic locations like Luke's Diner and Dragonfly Inn are no longer present in the studio. This Stars Hollow gazebo becomes an interesting photo op point when fans visit the set during a studio visit.
Although the show was mostly shot on the "Midwest Street" backlot, there were also some real locations that were used in the show. The show's pilot episode was shot in the town of Unionville, Toronto, and several other scenes were shot across different locations like Royalton, Vermont, Beverly Hills, and many more such locations.
